A while back it was still official policy that they wouldn't upgrade at all between specials & specials only being for new subscribers...now people are throwing tantrums about not getting pro rata despite that not even being promised?

Its 60 bucks...that doesn't even buy you a proper pitchfork. Nor is there any grounds for pitchfork usage here even if it did...

It's enough for petrol and some matches.

It is very difficult to quote a number, as Telkom does not officially reveal their contention numbers, and it fluctuates.

All we can control more or less is the contention on our IPC and internal network, which relates to shaping.

Hi Mr Beep. Just out of interest sake, could you give any sort of approximate value to the contention ratio on your Everyday uncapped accounts at at the moment? I'm just curious and interested because no ISP other than Cybersmart give the contention ratio or their accounts...Cybersmarts home uncapped is advertised as 15:1, or is that a lie? Seems rather low? Anyway, thanks :)

hey all sorry for to bother, i think something is wrong with my telkom or openweb account

Im happy with being charged the difference. In fact, Im quite sure that's what happened when I upgraded and I didn't even take note. But IF they are mentioning that you will pay pro rata rate then you should. Im not saying they are.

Also, I do think it is unfair to not charge pro rata. So if I upgrade from 1 meg to 2meg on the 25th of the month, I would essentially be paying for 2meg the whole month? Seems a bit unfair doesn't it?

I have had a look at Venoms ticket history, and he agreed to pay the difference between the old account and the new. No mention of pro rata was made.

When an account is upgraded, no pro rata is charged. You are charged the full difference between your old account and the new.

The ticket history shows him agreeing to this, and then complimenting OpenWeb on its great service.

It is a pity that Venom is unhappy. We really thought we were doing a good job by upgrading him so swiftly and providing him with the upgraded speed since he agreed. However, when payment was deducted, which he agreed to, a problem is raised.

I see his point, but do not agree with the perceived intentions. We are not offering a free service. We need to make money to survive, therefore need to collect payment for accounts, upgrades etc.

In the future, we will spell out the difference amount, and the time window the debit will take place in.

Hi Mr Beep,

I hear you loud and clear dude .Once again I will say this OW is outstanding when it comes to service. I am happy and yes the upgrade was fast it happened in a few e-mails. It was purely miscommunication between myself and OW.

Just an update on my problem that i brought up yesterday. I received a call from someone at OW and they have sorted the problem out,
to me this is really amazing service and they have really exceeded my expectation I’m extremely grateful.

Thank you OW !!!!!

Whats the 4MB everyday account like? I use my net during the day, don't necessarily need to download, but a decent connection for mail and remote connections would be nice.

Then that should be the perfect account for you IMO.

Hi MrBEEP,

Please can you guys prioritise Supersport traffic? The streams are under 100KB/s so hardly a dent in your traffic. It will really help streaming the sport during the day.

Here is my speedtest:

Last Result:
Download Speed: 1846 kbps (230.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 431 kbps (53.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 41 ms

Now I know that Supersport have been to blame previously, but they appear to have sneakily upgraded their systems and there have been few issues of late. Right now I'm getting serious buffering, and nobody else is reporting it, so I can only assume streaming traffic is being shaped...

Is telkom to blame?

I've finally quit OW after a year or so of up and down service.
During that time period, I must have logged at least 7 tickets regarding unplayable latencies of games or heavily buffered and interrupted video streaming in Youtube and such. I later on decided to upgrade towards their Gold uncapped account (2MB), thinking that the higher cost would warrant better service overall. No such improvement came.

Further tickets explaining my problem had their team constantly tweaking and sending me new details for newly created accounts. I also asked Mr Beep to help me out a couple of times, and indeed, MMO gaming was once again playable during daytimes - thanks to him for tweaking my account. However, as for downloads and streaming, I was still so heavily and ridiculously throttled during day times - barely getting 10k/s from my 2MB line. Reminds me of the 56k modem days..... Thats barely 5%...... on a GOLD account. I'm sorry but such service doesn't deserve R300 a month.

Overall, service delivery was a see-saw ride. The accounts team is awesome and Mr Beep knows his stuff. The responses are quick and efficient, but in the end, where it counts is the delivery of an internet service that's been a let down, especially of late. The worst is that I now have to pay for yet another calender month of service that I will definitely not use.

For now, I've gone back to Afrihost for temporary capped service, and would you know it, I'm streaming at 480 above and downloads are full speed. Awesome :) Latencies are also below 190ms.

@IterNit

Have you just being upgraded to the 4Mbps line.
If so ask them to reset your port.

Things to look at:
Filter pot. Supplied with Telkom ADSL modems. Change if you have a spare one.
Phone noise while phoning.
Stats look similar to mine. I do still have latency problems. Ping ~ 45 to 111ms at times.
Lend some else ADSL modem. Try it out.

Try using tracert from the command prompt as follow: tracert -d google.co.za >c:\Test.txt
This will create a test file in your root directory, the -d will take out the overheads.
You will see latency variations less than overheads.
Do two test one with -d other without the -d. Look at the latency generated by the two diffrent
commands:
tracert google.co.za >c:\Test1.txt
tracert google.co.za >c:\Test2.txt compare the two after running both way of using tracert. Look at the latency numbers (37ms etc per hop)

Isn't streaming always shaped on everyday uncapped?

I am confused as to all of the OpenWeb packages.

The have:
EveryDay Uncapped
Gold Uncapped
Platinum Uncapped
AfterHours Uncapped
Gold (Leon Edition)
Gamers King
Gold (Orange Edition)

I don't have a clue how the Gold (Leon Edition), Gold (Orange Edition) and Gamers King fit into the mix :(

Can anyone help tell me why Gold (Leon Edition) is different to Gold and Platinum and how Gamers King differs from all of these?

That would be a real pity, as the stream from Supersport requires minimal usage, is local, and sport happens at all times of the day. If it is going to be shaped then I really need to re-evaluate my package...

Leon gold is 598. 300 more than everyday uncapped for 4mbs. Not sure you will even have the ability to stream during the day either.
