Hi Mr Beep. Dropped you a PM. Dunno if my mail went through to support. Sitting on edge here.
My account t is refusing to connect tonight. Router shows DSL is UP. PM'd you my username.
Thanks

Hi Mr Beep and others here: just a quick question. I have an interesting scenario/problem: I am now on 4Mb DSL line (upgraded from 2Mb by Telkom) with a 4Mb OpenWeb Gold/Leon account, but the max speeds I get even when testing at 12:30am is about 365KB/s. I should be able to get about 440KB/s or more not so (even taking into account non optimal conditions, i.e. not just theoretical values)? The thing is that I have tested some other backup ISP (capped/prepaid) accounts I have and the same thing happens so it does not appear to be OpenWeb related; my download speed just cannot seem to go beyond about 365-380KB/s max. Anyone have any idea what could cause this or have had a similar experience? For reference, my line stats (all downstream):

SNR Margin (dB): 7.9
Attenuation (dB): 57.0
Output Power (dBm): 5.0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 5526
Current Rate (Kbps): 4096

My DSL is very stable, doesn't randomly disconnect or anything and the download speed is very stable at about 300-360KB/s (when not shaped of course), so it does not seem a stability problem. I know my attenuation is quite high (a bit far from exchange), but still...the modem shows that I can go till about 5.4Mb and the connection is stable. Could the attentuation/distance really be the problem? If so, how is it possible for me to consistently and stably connect at 4Mb, but the actual data throughput cannot reach beyond 370KB/s? Should I try a port reset at Telkom? Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Those DSL stats are bad, SNR below 10 will mean lots of packet loss. Attentuation is quite high too.

Reloaded the router's firmware and reset to factory defaults and all pings in trace route is below 20ms. Can I safely say that my router is failing?

So would that translate to me being able to connect stably at 4Mb, but only download get a maximum of 370KB/s downstream data throughput? That’s what I don't understand, how is it that I can be connected at 4Mb, but only have a maximum cap of 370KB/s. Is the additional capacity of the 4Mb connection then "lost" due to crc or other errors (assuming all other things being equal; i.e. no shaping, testing with multiple ISP accounts, exchange is not congested I already tested, etc.).

6:45 now and I'm still downloading at 2kB/s. It has not been a good day. I hope to god it improves at 7pm, or that MrBeep checks his PMs today.

At least you can connect. Been trying to get help with my authentication issues for over 2 hours. So far all I got was, turn off router for 20 minutes..... Telkom guest account works fine. Openweb account refuses to connect. sigh

MrBeep once told us that sometimes one ISPs settings gets embedded or something in a modem and when you the use another ISP, those embedded setting can screw with your account. Not exactly sure how that works, but that could be the case with you.

Not necessarily. My upload SNR was at just above 6 for the longest time and I never had any issues. That attenuation is not brilliant though. It might be a good idea for him to ask to have his connection speed dropped to 4Mbps. That should help.

I've never had an experience remotely comparable to that, and I've been on many, many different accounts. I very rarely use P2P.

What profile are you on? @mynetwork.co.za or something else?
Mine is ****@openweb.co.za. At one point my account was performing badly (after being fine for quite a while) and MrBeep provided me with another account with alternative routing. I have been mostly getting good service since then. Only real problem I had (not usually any more though since I started using Hola) is that streaming was behaving poorly.

I am in Welkom though. I know some areas have been having some intermittent problems.

Billion 400G. Quite old actually, around 3 years or longer.

That thing is a piece of crap. I gave mine away and the person I gave it to is also having issues with it but is too cheap to buy his own :D

Do you need wireless? If you just need a modem I would highly recommend getting a cheap Tenda modem. It is very cheap so you won't feel like you wasted money and if you decide to get a more feature packed modem sometime you can always keep it as a backup. They also tend to work extremely well with bad quality lines.

Check here: http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php/300mbps-wireless-adsl2-modem-router-p-1208 (I cannot vouch for this exact model though)

I do need wireless actually. Have multiple laptops and smartphones that connect. If this Billion router still gives issues what's a cheap and decent router would you suggest?

IMHO .... +1 for DrJohns comments.

Billion is k@k, and Belkin is just as k@k. Had a D link until a power surge killed it and replaced it with a Netgear. Netgear router has been the best so far, and not too pricey.

I will gladly offload the Billion to you ... do a DrJohn on you :D (not really, its a piece of sh.t).

Good luck.

TP-Link are pretty decent and are priced competitively - have one of the higher end models now but had a cheap one before and it never let me down - http://www.dbg.co.za/index.php?cPath=1_55_57

Have had the same router and modem from the beginning. The modem is a D-link 2500u and the router is an SMC, but isn't the most brilliant ever. The D-link has been without fault from the beginning though. I got both in 2008.

Billion is k@k

I beg to differ. I've had my Billion 7300G for 6 years, still running strong, bought another Billion router earlier in the year as I wanted to upgrade my wireless speed over the 7300G, it's also running superb. Just a pity that I had to quote such a "plat vloerse" word that you used to get my point across. Just because you think it's inferior doesn't mean that everyone finds it inferior.

But I suppose everyone is entitled to their own personal favourite router brand :)

I am a Netgear fan. Shoot me, but hey, I am biased.

Have always had a great experience with this router make.

Hi timmie,

Has support sorted you out?

If not, please PM me so that I can crack the whip
