Well tell support you've had all these issues and ask if you can move to the MTN network. Since Afrihost is working well and they use MTN, then you may have some luck if they move you over. Hopefully they will do that. Just send support a looooong message saying how disappointed you've been and ask to try the MTN network to see if it's better.

I have gone through all that over and over with openweb. I had a silver trail and it worked flawlessly, thought well get the gold special for increased reliability and got this bs.

I have my local exchange's number, the telkom technician that services my area and both have confirmed my line and the exchange is in perfect working order. It does have issues at times, but if i can use my afrihost account and it works perfectly and the openweb accounts does not work I can presume that in 99% of the cases it is with openweb.

I have had 5 different accounts too, some work well for a week then suddenly it all turns to ashe. The problem can not be with the area unless telkom actively is interfering with openweb accounts but they are too inept to do that. Even when openweb fixes the account a few days later the faults come back, i have an email account full of support emails.

I have submitted my cancellation notice and after jan I will be on either telkom or afrihost. I have gone from anger to utter disgust at their service and will in the end rate them WORSE than mweb. At least on mweb it will not work well today tomorrow issues will resolve themselves, here I will spend weeks to fix an issue just to get it fixed for a couple of days and then return.

BTW,

I have a brand new router, that I bought a week ago including EVERYTHING else including new pots filter and lightning and surge protector
The exchange was upgraded recently and is running at a fraction of capacity
Other accounts work as intended
The last account change, after I threatened to cancel worked well for a month, then a week ago it started acting up again. Which triggered the near R1000 spend to try and fix this on my side.
ports were reset 2 days ago with requests to find out if I can/will be upgraded to 10MB, fixed nothing.

Email down, web down, only skype chat kind of working..

Edit: working again. Aha and Facebook loads! Amaaazing..

On..off..on..off..

Similar issues here with OpenWeb Gold Uncapped Leon Edition Accounts. 8 of them in fact, ranging from 1MB to 4MB accounts.

Some accounts are in Stellenbosch (5), some in Cape Town CBD (1), some in Durban (1) and Durbanville (1)

All accounts just die a horrible death every now and then and comes right after about 30 minutes, then it's fast for a while and again randomly slows down to a halt, not even a glimpse of data passing through, just a solid "No buddy, you ain't going nowhere"... (And this is for all of them at the exact same time)

During the time of "nice try buddy" all other ISP's work fine, WebAfrica, Afrihost, even Mweb *shudder*

I can't seem to speak to anyone on the phone other than the receptionist?, it's always just mail support

Becoming fed up pretty quick. I was under the impression OpenWeb was the up and coming ISP to be with, apparently I was wrong.

Sounds pretty much like a big issue with your network rather than any form of shaping as we know for a fact none of our accounts go over +- 20-30gb a month.

welcome to my world... may god have mercy on your soul. btw where are you so we can show everyone that it isn't our lines but openweb. I am in potgietersrus, LIM

General browsing on Gold Leon Uncapped is dismal. Can't get > 1mbps on a 10mbps line. Loading a 4.5MB HR JPEG at 50KB/s.

This has been consistently a problem for almost 2 weeks. Come 17:00 or 17:30, browsing becomes unshaped. No problems at all with my line as it performed great on a platinum trial account from MrBeep.

There is something seriously wrong with the Gold Leon Uncapped accounts in terms of the shaping protocols.

Bandwidth monitor indicates 34KB/s. :-(

Greetings brother, from the bowels of Pinelands, Cape Town.

They switched my account, it was giving impressive speedtest results and then about an hour later i'm left with this abysmal connection, complaining from my phone.

AVOID OPENWEB!

Edit: Absolutely broken atm, nothing working. I feel like I've been robbed and lied to.

ok 2nd day in a row now 4 o clock when i get home and the internet is barely working cant browse even local sites im start to really think i need to move far far away from openweb

Streaming is very slow indeed atm. Can't even stream something at less than 300kbps on 4Mbps account.

And suddenly right after South Africa has finished batting, streaming stabilises, even working while downloading a driver.

Openweb's "Shaping" eases off at 5.00pm.

My friend Richard had this to say...

I use OpenWeb, MWEB, Telkom Internet, as well as FNB ADSL accounts and daytime browsing is always fast. We are talking internet browsing here, and everything besides downloading, which understandably is shaped/limited during the day. If you are expecting full speed downloads during the day, you need an OpenWeb platinum unshaped account.
OpenWeb is notorious for poor daytime browsing speeds - we are not talking downloads here. Their support will always write it off as 'being shaped because the network is busy', which is nonsense. I suggest you take it up with them if you are suffering from poor daytime browsing speeds, like I did when I first signed up a few months ago, and they will offer you a different account to test. Mine now works perfectly during the day since receiving a new account. As you mention, OpenWeb becomes unshaped from around 17h00, meaning you should be able to get full speed on downloads most of the time.

Remember that your browsing gets shaped if you download when shaping is applied. Just keep the que on hold and you shouldn't have a problem with non bandwidth intensive and real time tasks.

If you experience a problem with browsing drop me a PM and I will personally investigate your matter.

We have had 3 x cases today where the problem was on the routing side between the exchange and the DC.

Shaping looks at the following:

1. Service level
2. Network load
3. Forecasting of load
4. When the network is at critical peak, it will differentiate between those downloading during peak and those that are not. If you are, your browsing will be shaped until about an hour after you stop them.

MrBEEP: How exactly does shaping work with identical account types (10mb Gamer King accounts) that are on different routing profiles? Is it possible for one 10mb Gamer King account to be shaped to maybe 10% line speed, and then at the exact same time another 10mb Gamer King account to be shaped to say, 60% line speed?

In other words, is shaping determined by network usage per account, per exchange, per province, or by another factor?

Thank you

At what level is streaming prioritised on the different accounts during the day?
