OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

I have been logging my traffic for the past couple of days so I know that it started this morning at 6:55. The speed just dropped. At 07:05 it reach a constant and it stayed there the whole day till 5. Time Based.. Me think so. If I was on an unshaped package that would be fine. But I pay extra for an unshaped experience. Whether it was IS or Openweb is another story. If all of us that had problems with NNTP today live in Cape Town. Then it might even be telkom.

Thanks for that info, I live in Cape Town. I don't think it is Telkom, I did HTTP and other downloads and was then able to max my line nicely, was only NNTP (that I tried) that seemed to be shaped. Well .... I started a PPTP VPN to a host overseas and then did a NNTP to xsusenet that didn't help with the speed, so wan't NNTP as such I am guessing, felt more like "shaping of non mainstream protocols"

I am currently on the R169 Gamer's Delight special. I saw the new Standard uncapped special and thought I'd upgrade to 2Mbps. I didn't read the bit that said I would not be able to do that. I have now cancelled that upgrade.

That begs the question then: How useful are these specials then if they are for new customers only? Now if I want to upgrade to 2Mbps, I have to fork out R88 extra over the special, apart from the line rental. It brings the total extra I have to pay per month to R228, instead of R140. That makes me think twice about upgrading the line and getting the faster account, especially when the Standard account is probably not as optimised for gaming and downloading as the "Gamer's Delight, Downloader's Right" special is.

I have been touting Openweb all over the place as the ISP to be with, but I am a bit let down by this now. And now it leaves me open to considering specials from other ISPs, like WebAfrica's R239 2Mbps account. Where is the logic in that?

Except that these specials are usually limited to a certain number of accounts available. I understand you'd like to simply upgrade, but what happens if every time a special comes around all the existing customers 'upgrade' to it and leave little over for new customers?

Also been getting slow speeds on 4mbps gold, but resetting the router gets it back up to full speed, what is weird is that if the queue finishes and something is added later, then it crawls but a router reset sends it back to full speed.

The exact same thing is happening to me, except with latencies. I can launch GW2 directly after a router reset and it will be fine for hours on end. But then if I quit and launch it again later without rebooting the router I get pings of 500-800. I think there's definitely something wrong somewhere. Too many people this week have made the same complaints (from slow torrents to high latencies, etc) for this to be coincidental.

I also believe it is shaping, cant see any other explanation, but what bothers me then is I am on an unshaped account.

i went over to Openweb two days ago and at first it was awesome. Now.. I'm not so sure. My torrent speeds have been abysmal the whole day - 1Kb/s.... I have a 8Mbps Silver account. It is now 8:54 and gettign 150Kb/s. When I log in using my 2Mbps MWEB account I immediately get 220Kb/s.

Earlier today my account just stopped working. Had to restart router a few times. I have never had these issues before with MWEB. I have accounts with Afrihost and MWEB and both completely outperform my Openweb account. I'm not losing hope yet but I'm close to invoking the CPA.....

i understand shaping and the needs for it but if you have a 8Mbps acount you'd expect at least 1/4 speed at 9 in the evening.....

Hi Superspeed,

Kindly email me on [email protected] so that I can investigate.

There are no general issues currently. Our test lines are running at full speed on pretty much every protocol.

There were latency issues, as discussed earlier on this thread. There were also issues in the Western Cape area which was only resolved early this morning. We are monitoring, and so far all is running like a dream. It is not a co-incidence, as the fault was announced, and it affected most people in Western Cape.

Individual issues must be submitted to [email protected]

I have personally investigated your issue over the last while, and as discussed earlier on in this thread, we cannot find any issues with your unshaped account.

Right now I am achieving 454KB/s on a torrent download, logged into your ADSL account. The matter must be taken up with your line provider, Telkom. Trying a different router is also suggested.

I also believe it is shaping, cant see any other explanation, but what bothers me then is I am on an unshaped account.

Well seeing that there are numerous people with different types of Openweb accounts complaining about the same issue I suggest you start looking inwards.... I have accounts with MWEB, Afrihost and Openweb and only Openweb is giving me these slow speeds.

If I had a 2Mbps Openweb account 150Kb/s would be fine. I have a 8Mb/s Openweb account.... My 2Mbps MWEB shaped account is outperforming this account. That can't be right.

I am a Telkom Wholesale provider so I can reset my DSLAM port. Which I did. Doesn't make a difference....

I have picked up the ticket. I trust I have identified the correct person as its very difficult to link a MyADSL username to a person without confirmation. Please confirm I have replied to the correct person by mailing me.

I have been mailing [email protected] the whole day. He reset the account etc. Still the same. I will gladly post results from the different providers if you want.

"Right now" I am also achieving full line speed. The problem was today from early morning till 5 this afternoon. As many have also mentioned. I was testing from 3 telkom lines in 2 different locations on 3 different Openweb accounts and had the same results during the day on each. And at 5 this afternoon everything returned to normal. I thought this is a feedback thread, but what is the use. We supply feedback to help us in troubleshooting and appreciate the effort you make from your side. 90% of the time it is telkom, we all know it, but there is still the 10% The fact remains: People, not just me, experienced the same issue at the same time from various locations TODAY. We reported it. Please do not assume most of us are complete idiots lacking the basic skill of troubleshooting. Lets move on. We just want to get to the bottom of todays problem.

Regarding my issue you mentioned. It got resolved after I gave up trying to prove to you that it was not my line and got a trial account by requesting it through my resellar, which immediately solved my problems. This whole week was great. My speeds increased drastically. Today's issue was different.

We are talking about the NNTP prob of today not torrents. Thats probably a different issue of other users. NNtp is full speed again

NNTP on my side is also achieving great speeds. that wasn't the issue. Let's see how it is tomorrow.

The speeds went up suddenly to 400Kb/s+. Whatever the problem was - it is sorted now. Shaping gone bad?

That is true.

Have a look at my options now though:

1) Stay on 1mbps uncapped at R169 p/m
2) Move to 2mbps Vanilla account at R239 p/m
3) Move to 2mbps Standard account at R297 p/m
4) Move to WebAfrica's 2mbps uncapped account at R239 p/m, also on IS backbone.

Yesterday afternoon I decided to move to the Vanilla 2mbps account and it has not performed well. At 24h00 it was (and still is) getting < 130kBps on an Origin download of Battlefield 3. Doing anything (Youtube, ftp, torrents), even during off peak, results in a dramatic zigzag of the bandwidth jumping between 1200 kbps and 800 kbps, with a spike to 1700kbps every now and then.

Switching over to a 2GB Webafrica capped account (which apparently is under the same prioritisation rules as the IS uncapped accounts) and immediately it goes at over 200kBps with a less dramatic zigzag running between 1500kbps and maybe 1750kbps.

It might be a small sample size, but from this it seems clear to me that OpenWeb's Vanilla uncapped will not perform as well as WebAfrica's uncapped account. So the two accounts I have to consider is the WebAfrica 2mbps account at R239 and the OpenWeb Standard 2mbps account at R297. Without the option of me upgrading to the Standard account at the special price of R209, I am literally forced to move to WebAfrica. Waiting around for better contention ratios is just not worth it and without guarantees. The policy, while there being brilliant deals for new customers, is now causing OpenWeb to lose me as a customer altogether. I would have thought that they'd rather do something to keep someone in my position around than to lose their business altogether.

I will probably have to still pay for March if I leave now, but the performance difference it big enough that I probably won't wait to get the WebAfrica account.

I always said that if WebAfrica produced a good uncapped service that I'd return to them. I moved to them the first time way back when the OpenWeb VPN accounts were performing poorly. Now things seem to have gone full circle, with me trying out MWEB and Axxess along the way as well.

Edit: I was in fact being a massive idiot: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...dback-Thread?p=9874364&viewfull=1#post9874364
