Sometimes you just got to love your modem/router - then take a big hammer and bliksim it into tiny bits and peaces.

Hey MrBEEP,

Please let me know which product would bet suit:

2Mbps line, download max 150gig per month mostly torrents and almost always in off peak times, must have good youtube and gmail performance, no online gaming, dont mind shaping in peek times but must not be throttled at any time!! Im thinking vanilla?

Cheers

The latency is rather poor this evening. I have noticed recently that my latency has been shocking and the downloads are really poor too, and this is early hours of the morning. Its very very erratic.

I just did a speed test now, and my torrents are at a standstill, latency is far above what it usually is. I'm in Cape Town.

Hi Brendan,

Based on the 2nd hop, I would say this is a congested exchange issue or similar.

A 199ms and you are no even officially on the network yet.

Please contact Telkom on 10210 and log an official fault.

Please keep us updated

150GB calls for Standard Uncapped I would say.

You will get great performance out of this account, and a much lower contention ratio.

We do not throttle.

Nduimiso

I think i have the same problem and im also in cape town.
My dad complains every morning that the net is so slow and i ask him to do a speed test and the download is lying way back at 0.30kb/s...

I think its throttling, seeing as our upload does not move..
Its also intermittent, 1 hour its 0.30kb and and the next its 1.79kb.

I cancelled with mweb just for openweb.. Would be nice if its finally fixed, because im finding it hard to back you guys up when my father is permanently complaining about slow speeds.. :(
Yip I'm having the same, but not on all sites, just some of them.

You don't throttle but you shape the cr@p out of your users.
I am on 4mbps uncapped standard and office hours speeds are terrible.
I started working from home again on 25 Feb so never really noticed this prior to that. I make sure there are zero downloads are running so my line is open. Simple browsing, or grabbing a Microsoft SP, or anything at all - is chronically slow. Browsing the web looking for info is a painful experience.

Yesterday morning I eventually got the hell in and signed up for an Afrihost 4mbps uncapped again. It's like a brand new Internet. Zero frustration for two days.

I have been punting OW all over. Now I am not so sure.

Hello,

Kindly email [email protected] with your ADSL username.

Also please include the following:

* A few example sites you experience the slow speeds on
* a tracert to www.openweb.co.za

We do not throttle. We do however shape based on how busy the network is at any given time.

Im now on the guest account, i cant even load speedtest.net, so i used the myboardband one.
Still getting under 1mb... around the 0.45-0.66kb mark.

Taking forever to load facebook etc etc..

Currently running a business at home and cant afford to be down so low.

Good to hear that you guys dont throttle at least..

Please advise.

EDIT:

Before i did this post i recieved an email from support saying:
"I have picked up a routing issue from your exchange to our network."
What does this even mean?...

I am experiencing the same THROTTLING during office hours. I mailed support and they say I should contact Telkom to check my line. If I switch to my Mweb account I get full speed so I know my line is fine.
This is throttling and not shaping. I have to wait for normal web pages to open on a 4Mbps account. :(

Is the troubleshooting account working any better?

We do not throttle.

Please do not make unjustified statements.

Pm me your ADSL username

mrbeep but i thought this shaping/throttling/slowness during office hours was normal for the standard uncapped right?

There is a big difference between shaping and throttling.

We do not throttle.

We do shape based on how busy the network is at any given time.

Eg, on Gold Uncapped around 65% on average of any given month is completely unshaped.

Experience is the same for me dude. It is horrible.
Day 3 of Afrihost now and still no issues - and I am paying the same price. So it is definately not Telkom. It is OpenWeb reducing the connection to painful.
I find early morning is still fine, by lunch time it is starting to get noticeably slow. By 13H30 or so, the simplest webpage takes forever. On Afrihost I am not experiencing this at all.

OpenWeb can call it throttling, shaping, whatever. The end result experience is sub standard.

Kindly email [email protected] so that it can be investigated.

It should not be 'this' slow.

Network Notice: There is currently a fault affecting some clients where browsing is extremely slow. The fault started at around 07:30am. Engineers are attending.

We apologise for the inconvenience.

Thanks for the update, all my connections just died, and browsing is extremely slow.

I already did that on Fri last week.
I was told that I should upgrade my package to Silver I think it was (whatever is next up from Standard). No thanks.

I understand if my downloads get shaped/throttled/?, but simple web browsing slowing to a crawl is not right.

I've had the same 'no throttling' response.

I also take this to mean browsing etc should be 100% when downloads are stopped.

Yet everything is slow. OW advise contacting Telkom to reset port, yet when I connect before that with a different account (telkom or mweb), everything runs 100%.

What's going on?
