Openweb Gold Shaping Policy 2

Open Web Gold or is it fool’s gold.

Looks the same, feels the same, but is it the same. Apparently not, if you read this thread:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/499598-OpenWeb-Gold-Shaping-Policy

I really like what Open Web has done in the past, MR Beeps has been innovative and helpful for many years. So I was very disappointed to see that there Gold Uncapped Promotion was not actually a Gold Uncapped account.

And very disappointed to see Mr Beep saying he has nothing to apologise for, it is blatantly false advertising. If you changed the product, say you changed the product BEFORE taking people’s money.

Just had to have my say because when companies pull this kind of thing it really pi**es me of and seeing the thread was closed had to do it in a new thread.

And -THIS- is why I've stuck with MWEB since day 1 of uncapped. Openweb has its fans, but the sheer arrogance displayed here..
"Just because it says gold, doesn't mean you should compare it to the 'Original Gold'(tm)."

Downloading at 350kb/s ( self limited so that I can browse ) on my 4M MWEB uncapped account during business hours, right now. #justsaying

I am also on OpenWeb, but I actually switch accounts during business hours to a capped unshaped account. So at night I can download to my heart's content and during the day I can browse and read emails as much as I need to.

see pm.

Doesn't mean there is no shaping. No uncapped ISP in SA could offer a fully unrestricted, unshaped account at consumer prices.

It does however mean you can download what you want, how you want and not be throttled because of your usage.

I'm not disputing this. I was just curious if one can use one account for all your needs not all your greeds ;)

Its sad that that is what u need to do to use the internet in daytime, and the reason i left.

Well in my case I managed to grab one of those WebAfrica RedAfrica Accounts when they were on offer... 30 Gigs of capped Data (and 100 gigs of Download Plus After hours) for R199 a month. So I just use that during the day. But I'm sure you could find something that would suit you.

these promo accounts were dirt cheap to start off with so I don't understand why all the complainers.

Hmmm so I've been pretty happy with openweb but checking my invoice reveals I'm on "4mbps gold uncapped promotion" which is now not the same as the gold advertised on their website. Feel like a bit of an idiot now as I think one would naturally assume that the lower price is because the "gold" package was on a "promotion" meanwhile it seems I actually have "4mbps gold uncapped minus" and there's no promotion in there at all as it's just a lower package.

Certainly makes shopping around easier...

WTF seriously dude, you need 1 uncapped account and 1 capped account just to ensure you can browse during the day!?
Surely you joking right, either that or you must be some serious OW Fanboi.........

*Grabs popcorn, waits for the troll*

I'm happy with what I use.
If you are not happy, you are of course welcome to go and find another provider.
Nobody is forcing you to stay here or to use this account.

You guys sure are unhappy with your gold accounts.

I am on some OW Silver Red special account, and it is pretty damn good as far as I can tell, in fact I can browse on it during the day, p2p dies out a bit at times, but nntp usually goes around 200-400KB/sec even during the day, worst times it goes down to 40KB/sec. The only problem I have with it, is that they don't allow account on it, and that is something one can live with I guess.

Maybe OW Gold is over rated.

You are still using a Gold Uncapped service.

You receive a Gold priority, with Gold benefits (Free Wifi), and you are on the Gold profile.

During guaranteed unshaped periods, Gold, irrelevant of edition, will be unshaped before any of the lower service levels.

ALL Gold editions have priority over any of the lower service levels.

The reason why there are more affordable Gold versions is purely to allow more folks to take advantage of one of South Africa's most loved uncapped service levels.

It is unfortunate that a few individuals have taken this and created 3 x threads about the same topic.

Unfortunate for who? I didn't start the thread to discuss your product range. I'm finding this all very enlightening as it seems a lot of people have issues with your marketing.

All I wanted to do was say thanks to JohnRambo for the heads up but the closed thread didn't add up to me.

I'm really have no issues with your products as I've never used them, and to be fair they seem to be most excellent according to others. But I won't be brow beaten or dictated to on how or where I post about whoever I choose to as long as I keep within the forum rules.

You are missing the point Mr Beep, for me, the quality of the account is not in question. I don’t have one so can’t comment, but I was considering purchasing one and believed at the time that it was your normal Gold account as that is what your promotion led me to believe.

Whether it’s the best account or not is immaterial, whether I will trust your promotions again is another question.

And that is why this community exists.

We have improved the presentation of our promotional packages and have added alot of extra information to the website to assist folks with their decision. Of course, it will never be perfect, especially not in a dynamic environment such as broadband connectivity.

Don't think we have simply brushed off the comments on this forum. The sole reason why I personally represent OpenWeb on the forum is due to the roots level feedback we receive.

We are currently working on improving the package display even further to make it easier for clients to choose their desired service level.

One thing we will never do though, is remove the choice. One of the main reasons OpenWeb has grown so astronomically in the last few years is due to the different package choices we provide. Our clients do not like a 'one size fits all' solution. Our challenge though is to make the choices more understandable and accessible to folks.

Just looking at the site is a bit confusing, whats the difference between your Gold (Leon Edition) & Gold (Orange Edition)? Is the first a product only used for specials? Or is certain bandwidth prioritized for each package i.e gaming (but that seems like it would fall into the Diamond package)

Gold Uncapped (Leon) has the following difference:

8% higher contention ratio
Priority on gaming

Do you have some suggestions as to how we can make the website more user friendly?

Just to add, I have been with Openweb since i left MWEB and I am very happy (besides some minor authentification issues very quickly sorted out)

I realise there is shaping during the day, so i only care if browsing, email and once in a while Youtube is not affected personally during business hours

Just think this could all be avoided by a chart comparing Gold services, like the one you have that compares Vanilla, Gold, Diamond etc.

Edit: After looking around your site a bit, I'm pretty impressed by the way you try to individualize your products based on the clients interest, it just needs to highlight the differences (Leon only shows on the promotion page, but if I was looking for gaming DSL, your Gold page only lists Orange Edition)
