So my line got automatically upgraded from 1 meg to 2 meg in December.
I was using an Afrihost line which was running quite well, going at the full 2 meg most of the time. This includes midday during working hours. I then saw the openweb gold account for sale and thought it would be a good idea to save some bucks. I have tried a silver account from them before which was slower than Afrihost but assumed the gold would at least be comparable.
I am not sure if it is maybe only a problem I am experiencing but during the day my speed is about 1 - 10 kb/s. Offpeak about 20 - 100 kb/s. I have managed to get the full 2 meg for a couple seconds over night but in general it is very slow. My gold uncapped 2 meg is running slower almost all the time than my old Afrihost account. It also very seldom runs over 1 meg so I am starting to doubt the point of this package.

Is this something others have experienced with Openweb or is it just me.
Using my parents Afrihost login details at my house still yields 2 meg constantly so it isn't a line problem.

openweb adsl only works from 5 pm till 8am , its basically only afterhours :p

trying loading anything in peak time it just wont budge :p

That is so true. A friend of mine buys their once of monthly capped data and complains about
being shaped during the day. When I asked him why he doesn`t move he said he can`t afford going
for a debit order (monthly opt-in) and has to buy his data monthly since some months he can`t afford it.
Apparently only openweb allows this...

What are your line stats?

I've had this issue recently with my Gold Account.
Up until Jan it was working like a dream. Lanned 5 guys on a 2MB account for DOTA 2 without a hitch.
This week however its been so slow. Night and day it has barely worked.
Emailed their customer support and was advised to switch router off for a bit. Been working better since.

At work now so can't check line stats, but they aren't great. Although as I said the connection works perfectly on other service providers. I even tried a Webafrica trial. I get attenuation of around 47.5 and snr of somewhere near 14 on download and like 19 on upload if I remember.
Judging from the replies it sounds like the openweb account is quite pointless. Oh well, bit of a waste of money then on my part.

Hmmmm, yeah my dota 2 has been jerky as well. I will maybe try resync line and reset router and stuff when I get home.
If Mrbeep reads this can you please advise me on any other way to fix it. This morning at 6:30 am I couldn't even access gmail it was so slow...

Check your line stats. if the slowness started after your line upgrade you could be having issues.

No the slowness started after I changed service provider, it ran fine on afrihost even after upgrade.

For an official OpenWeb response, kindly post in our official feedback thread:

I had the same issues when with OpenWeb on the gold package. Save yourself a lot of hassle and just go back to Afrihost.
This is such a common issue with OW. Some peeps are lucky and everything is fine, but if you are one of the many with this problem, just move. It is unlikely to get fixed.

/Yes - I am bitter about OW. Lived with this cr@p for way too long. Wish I had moved earlier and not lost those extra years of my life due to internet connection stress.

These are exactly the reasons why I moved from OpenWeb... unusable internet (Gmail, Google, MyBB all would time out) during business hours. It's kind of ridiculous.

I've already seen countless reports about OpenWeb on these forums reporting exactly the same problem. And the only person who didn't have any issues with his/her connection was really angry at me...

My advice: Move to Afrihost or Mweb (premium).

Wow so I am not the only one with the issues I have been having...... So u guys reckon Afrihost?

For sure!

For close on a year I struggled with OW. Working from home meant I depended on my home connection. OW respond to connection issues, but you got to mail then every other day. It's painful having to nurse your internet like that.

Moved to AH Business and viola. Internet that just worked. Zero, zilch, nada issues.

Any Afrihost account or Mweb Premium account. I went with Afrihost since I've already tried Mweb before.

I've personally had great service from Mweb. The only reason I moved was because they throttled my 1mb account after exceeding 100GB :(. However, if you go with 2Mb or 4Mb premium, the thresholds are much higher.

So now I decided to go with Afrihost, and I must say that the quality of their network is just as good as, if not better than, Mweb.

I went Business. Business and capped are the only unshaped and unthrottled packages you can get.
Business uncapped performs the same as a capped account.

Never had a problem with OpenWeb. Always get full speed for everything except downloads during the day. Downloads generally range between 1/3 to 1/2 line speed during the day - I'm on a Standard Uncapped account so you should have no problem with speeds during the day or night.
If I ever did have a problem I emailed support and they sorted me out in no time! I hope you've emailed support? Maybe you should ask for a new account, that may sort your problem out, but email support! ;)

You missed the point dude.
Those of us that have this after 11 issue during office hours cannot get it fixed. OW support becomes your every other day routine. Not worth it.
You are lucky if you are not plagued by the after 11 issue.

Ask support to change you to the MTN backbone then. Note: they may only change you over if you explain all your troubles. I figure that if Afrihost apparently works a whole lot better than OpenWeb, then why not change to the same backbone as Afrihost. Maybe you're in a part of the country that Internet Solutions is not as good as MTN.
