Openweb Uncapped Feedback

Hey Friends,

There was a fault earlier, but all should now be sorted across the board. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Guys, I can't seem to get any answers out of Openweb themselves so I'll pose the questions here. Openweb ADSL Uncapped light package terms state:
Uncapped LITE
The account is UNSHAPED.
* Fair Usage Policy:
Users are divided into two groups. 80% and 20%. 80% of the user base will always experience full speed access, with no shaping. 20% of the user base will be shaped. The fair usage policy on our Lite accounts is dynamic. Low to mid range users will always experience unshaped, superior access.
Why Lite?
If you are a gamer, and do not download 24 / 7, Lite offers you unshaped ADSL access, which allows you to enjoy the benefits of the internet without being slowed down. VOIP worksGreat. Don't get us wrong, P2P and torrents will be a breeze, until you enter the 20% bracket, upon which they will be drastically shaped.

The question: how much downloading per month/week/day, very roughly would put me into the top 20%. I do game and I do download the odd torrent, this package may be a better fit for me. However if I download 5Gb one night and then get bumped into the top 20%, it’s not going to work. Also, if the shaping does come into effect, does it affect gaming, browsing and http downloads or just torrents?

Is anyone on the Lite Uncapped package that can shed some light on this for me? I am currently on the Uncapped Standard and last night I wanted to download a 100Mb torrent. Well 24hrs later and I've downloaded 17Mb. That I'm afraid isn't going to work for me.

Oh, and when I say "roughly" how much, is it like 2Gb, 20Gb or 200Gb just so that I have some kind of idea..

The rules governing the Lite accounts are enforced by IS (Internet Solutions). OpenWeb simply resells those accounts, they don't determine what qualifies as the top 20%.

Very little. I was on the lite account for 2 months and got into the 20% 3 times. I didn't download a lot and got in there quite easily. Rather go for the standard uncapped than the lite uncapped.

points is dont buy the lite accounts, its same one afrihost sells and 100 other re sellers, it will throttle you and you will complain about slow internet after a while.

some people even get throttled at 20gb on 4mb accounts etc, save your self the troubles go for GOLD.

Just get a GOLD account and be done with it. Any other uncapped account just isn't worth it.

Isn't there a bandwidth monitor on these accounts allowing you to see your ranking? I would have thought a limitation like that would require the ability to monitor usage.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The problem with the standard is that I can't even download a 100Mb torrent, it seems to be totally blocked.. Even downloading a *.torrent file off TPB.org is impossible until I log my axxess account. If the torrent were slowish, then fine, but 17Mb in 24Hrs?

Ok, so the light is a no-go as well. To be honest, my initial dealings with Openweb have left a rather bad taste in my mouth (lack of communication for one when asking simple questions) I think I'll be sending off my 30 day cancellation notice tomorrow and get uncapped with Axxess.

To only be given the exact same account as they also resell IS. Good move! Be sure to let us know how that worked for you

Get the gold uncapped, UNSHAPED or don't bother.

Yah, ok, you're the second person to say that now, if I had bunches of money lying around I'd do that believe me. What irks me is that I don't need an "expensive" account for downloading the measly amount that I do. If I download 5-10Gb in a week it's a lot. So I need to have a GOLD account to achieve that if most of what I want is .torrent based?

Axxess resell the exact same accounts Openweb sell.

The extra for GOLD really is worth it for a decent uncapped experience.

Try moving to Lite for a month then. If it doesn't work THEN go to GOLD.

Yeah that may be a plan. As much as I appreciate the input from you guys, I wish someone from Openweb could have pointed me in the right direction or at least give me some idea which account would best suite my needs.

So no other ISP's have the equivalent package to the GOLD? And now that we have broached the whole GOLD scenario, what are roughly the amounts able to be downloaded on that package per month before getting throttled to hell?

Coz believe me, if I'm gonna pay R318 excl Telkom for a 384k line, I'm gonna download at least part of the interwebz :P
