make sure all your torrent apps is closed or anything that downloads, then it should log in :P

I also often have issues logging into Steam from VB.... and no, no other downloads running and no torrents either (VB can't even spell p2p).
Funny, my Minecraft has this issue too. I simply get timeouts randomly... and at other times it's perfectly fine.

On 1mb Gold Plus.
Surfing, YouTube and downloads from gametrailers.com work fine.
utorrent is throttled/shaped which is fine considering it's office hours and most importantly I can still do what I lister above.
However my only issue is that I can't connect to STEAM.
Aren't the servers local? Or is it just the DL servers and not the authentication servers?
I wanna play a game. :(

Hmm, does it say 'Not Responding' when you try logging in? Mine used to do that when I was on the IS backbone, and if I left it like that for about 20 minutes, it would eventually log in.

Strangely enough, ever since going on VB, my Steam logs in almost instantly. :P

Definitely something going on at the moment, I'm on the After hours unshaped uncapped, and my speeds are jumping between 300kb/sec - 600kb/sec (on a 6mb line).

Is that after hours unshaped account any good?
They recommended I switch to that instead of 4mbps gold,
They also said that it's 256k during the day, yet the site says its 192k during the day:
http://preview.openweb.co.za/index_uncapped.asp?Selected=7

So which is it?

I'm hesitant to switch to an even more expensive account when I don't even have a 6mb+ line to make full use of the after hours speed :(

@MrBeep I see you're handing out VB accounts at the moment, can I try one of those today?

I'm on IS backbone. Sorry for leaving that part out.
Will give it a few more tries.

Edit: No go. Tried a few more times and even with nothing else running or DL'n form the net it still won't connect.

I got a new VB account from MrBeep last night:

And everything is flying again, still going to test it later this afternoon, but I think I finally have a winner on my hands again :D

I was on VB for two days again and while NNTP was running at full speed, I had problems with everything else including latency on gaming. HTTP was running at 6kb/s this morning. Keoma changed me back to IS. Now getting 100kb/s on news servers but gaming and http seems to be running much better. Will check the speeds again tonight after 5 and see what happens.

Have both of you checked to see that you in fact syncing at 1024 and not 512?

Ofcourse, and as stated I get full line speed (1mb/ps) on Telkom and WA accounts, so it is NOT my line. It is my Openweb Gold account that is the problem.

Hello frailwings,

Please email [email protected] with your MyADSL username and ADSL username and I will investigate.

guys a question. i have a standard 384 line for the time being. when i download through say a torrent what kb/s will i normally get?

If it's unshaped, you should get 40kbps, but will obviously get less if the torrent is poorly seeded/you're on a shaped account.

I can't comment on whether this is the norm, but I share this experience with you.

I recently upgraded to 1meg Gold (IS Backbone), but I haven't seen speeds anywhere close to 90kb/ps, infact my download speeds are generally 26-38kb/ps. I was getting that back on 384k Gold. In general this account feels more like a standard account than a Gold one (Comparing my experience with 384k Gold).

Also, this isn't my experoence after one day, it's after a week. I have also reset my ports and router etc.

What is the norm for 1Meg Gold, is this out of the ordinary or normal?

Depends what account you have, time of day and how well seeded the torrent is.

Downloads running at 100kb/s :/ Started a 4 gb download this morning at 6am and its only 37% done so far *sigh*

guess i am being shaped cause i switched on my telkom account and getting 40kb/s. so it must be shaped.

Getting weird latency issues on VB. I play a game fine for 5 minutes, then after that the latency rises to unplayable levels and stay there. Anybody else experiencing something similar? Which backbone is the best for gaming?

My speed is flying at the moment, had 2 power failure at home today. Maybe this reset the ADSL exchange as well?

I actually find VB to be best for gaming latency wise. I've never had a problem where the latency would rise to unplayable levels like you're experiencing Graal. I have to say it's always interesting to see how the lot of us here in this thread have a different type of problem with the same type of account on the same backbone. Anyhow, I'm going to play some Bad Company 2 later on, will post back my findings if I did encounter anything unusual.

Hmm, I seem to have been mistaken. It's just latency spikes, but they happen often enough to be very, very annoying. Somebody recommended the Altech backbone for gaming, so I'll ask MrBeep to move me there tomorrow to check that out. The downloads on VB are excellent, though, getting full line speed all day long.

I had the same thing with VB this week and had to change over to IS. Could not play games on it anymore. Also got full speed news servers.

Do you get full speed on news servers during business hours as well using IS ?

I switched back to VB, played some BC2 last night, but at one point I got disconnected and kicked for "losing key packets" via punkbuster. Wasn't very cool whatsoever, yesterday I got speeds of 420kb/s plus on NNTP, last night after I mailed MrBeep my speed degraded again to 260kb/s. This morning it did pickup again though and running at about 360-380kb/s. Streaming is still acceptable at this stage, will keep on monitoring it till late afternoon, otherwise I'm switching back to IS.
