Hello
I just saw the OpenWeb VPN offering and am interested by the 10Gig account they now offer.

Just a few questions:
  1. If you have a 384kbps ADSL line, you will still get 384kps right? Not 512kbps.
  2. Do you get any email addresses with this?
  3. How is the latency in this and the speed?
  4. Can you run this in a network of 5 PC's at home? Or can you only have it on one pc?

Thanks very much.
Jonno

Yeah 384 not 512, your line is 384 so...
I think you do get e mail with it, maybe 1 - 5
latency on IS is not great IMO
If you have a router you can run as many as the router has ports. 5 lan ports = 5 pc's, then also wireless

Not necessarily. If its a VPN account you'll have to make a VPN connection from each PC, unless you want to use something like ICS. If you want to make multiple VPN connections you'd have to find out from Openweb how many simultaneous connections are allowed.

Not sure what you mean with this. IS local never goes over a sattelite connection. All fiber optic. So it fiber optic all the way to openweb and from there they say its unshapped fiber access which is very possible. :)

I stopped using IS as they are cr@p. Syndre, but surely if he enters the account into the router / modem, then using DHCP he can connect as many as he wants. I used that account from Openweb and did it like that and it worked.

Did you use on of their VPN accounts like that? Because they say this on their website:

1. You connect your router / adsl line to a 30GB local only account we provide you.

2. You then create a new VPN connection using Windows Networking / Network Connections to our server.

So you could access the local only account via your router but for international access it looks like you need to make a VPN connection from each individual PC. I've never used one of these accounts so I might be wrong.

Hey Friends

If your router supports a PPTP VPN connection, you will be able to access the VPN using the router.

We host our own VPN backbone, which does not go over the IS international link. IS will only come into play via the local portion to our server.

I trust this will answer some of the questions.

If you have any further questions, kindly mail me on: [email protected]

Kind regards

I'm a little confused what this VPN is. Say I use my 4mb line, I will get 4mb speeds with say the 30gb account? What are the actual speeds?

A proxy server on steroids :)

Basically, you will get 512k speeds when connected to the VPN, and 4mb speeds when connected to only the local only account :)

Think of it as a proxy server..

Your VPN connection is over Fibre, but from there to international could be sattelite. Best is if you contact them and ask... Let us know :D

The international bandwidth runs over the SAT3 cable, and does not work via Satellite, which is a major advantage!

Sorry to bring this up again, but I am planning on getting it this month.
If I 5gb int and 1gb local with Axxess and just keep a 1gb prepaid so that I can keep my old email addresses, will I still be able to access the Axxess SMTP and POP3 servers?

If this has a Private IP, I guess it means no game/teamspeak/web server hosting right?
What about opening ports, etc.?

Thanks
Jonno

Would like this answered as well.

I do server support (telnet/ssh) some gaming and also downloads.

What is the situation with different (non-standard) ports? What about p2p and telnet/ssh.

What is the latencies and the ping times? I am currently using a 4mb DoBroadband account and I see ping time in excess of 300 to London and 512 to Sweden. Typically the telnet/ssh gets problematic if ping times goes above 250. Will the Openweb VPN connection improve this and will it be more stable?

They say it is an unshaped fibre IS account and that p2p ports are not blocked.
So the latency should be good.

Introducing the brand new OpenWebVPN ADSL account. This new revolutionary product allows you 100% unshaped bandwidth, P2P and torrent downloads, and pretty much anything you can think of on the net, running over our FIBRE Based network for the best latencies!

What is the reason for tunnelling using VPN ? to avoid shaping by IS ?

Do they know ? Is this going to be a short term arrangement ?
