Hi Guys

I am currently with bitco on a 10Mbps line uncapped. Lately I have noticed that my daughter has been watching youtube music videos at night on her Note 4 instead of turning in at bedtime.

Is there any way of curbing access to the internet on a mobile device at certain times of day. I am able to do this on her laptop but cant figure out how to do it on mobile.

Appreciation in advance for your advice

SuperDad

You could setup Pfsense, install Squid and Squid Guard and then add time-based rules.

You would need a spare machine with 2 nics to get this right though.

Edit:

If you get this right I doubt your daughter will be referring to you as "SuperDad" ;)

You need to buy or build a proxy or firewall.

Internet>Router>Proxy>Wifi/lan>end users.

Likely what you will need is as follows:
Any old computer that can have 2x lan cables attached to use as your proxy/firewall.
Depending on how your wifi works at the moment you will likely need an Access point.

Check out smoothwall for a totally free system with a small learning curve or Kerio Control for some serious power in a very easy to use system but at a cost.

Require her to leave her note4 on charge in the kitchen at bedtime.

No need to buy or build anything, change your router settings to dish up permanent IP's for certain devices then restrict their access during certain times of day. Depends what bitco gave you as a router, but I'm assuming it is a nice one

+1

This is the best way to do it. Block all traffic to the tab during certain times of the day. Most routers can do this, even many cheaper ones.

Most routers can be set to only establish connection at certain times.
This will however cut internet for everyone , but you are a parent and should be snoring away at 10pm anyways :p

Just login to your router and change the password, it will kick everyone out.Used to do it when my in - laws were staying with me :D

Surely you can log onto the router and just block her device? My Netgear ADSL router let's my block according to make address.

Or disable wifi?

Have a look at qustodio.com

You'll be able to use the free version with your requirements

With most routers you should be able to set up Access Control based rules for specific devices (IP or MAC addresses) and even allow or block access for specific time of day and night.

One of our clients has a similar problem. This is the solution we provided.

We replaced his D Link router with a Mikrotik RB951
We made the kids' phones and tablets ip addresses static in DHCP.
We then used Mangle rules to mark that traffic and created restrictive queues for each device.
We then used the scheduler and some scripts to switch the queues on and off and to change the speeds. If son's bedtime is 10:00pm, then his queue goes to 1Kb at that time.

It's complicated to get set up, but it works.

You could of course change ISP - to OW, in which case the ISP will restrict access ..... or the person with whom you share an account :D

Talk to your child.

Explain to her the importance of a good nights sleep and then trust her to act accordingly?

This isn't a technical problem, it's a discipline issue. Do your job and help to instil in her the self discipline that will help her all through life.

I was about to recommend Mikrotik for that :D
I haven't tried it yet, but in Mikrotik you can setup time based firewall rules as well to block whatever you want. Seems like an easier way to do it.
(I currently use the mikrotik to rate limit my kids, family and visitors. Dad gets full speed access :D )
