Parkrun

Started running this end of last year. It's awesome and my wife and I enjoy the chilled run.

I am more active than her but it is something that we do together. I often sacrifice a run for some quality walking time with her.

Only done the woodlands run and its scenic with a few killer up hills.

PB is 36min.

Aiming to beat it some time soon.

I have completed 25 at 15 different locations.

Going to the inaugural run at Kimberly on Saturday.

SO and Daughter persuaded me to take part, they are both well over 50 runs.

My home run is Voortrekker, nice easy 1.6Km hill up to the fort.

Maybe I should give it a try again, seems I last did one in October. I heard R44 parkrun is getting very crowded lately...

Doing my 19th this weekend.

Nice, keep going with it.

Nice one guys! Keep going. I really should do another one sometime, most of the time I run 12~14k as training for half marathons.

Squeezing in some hard 5k efforts is always good for training.

My wife and I normally start together and then I wait for her at the end. If Im up for a slow one then I will run at her pace.
Your times will come down quite quickly though, I started on 48mins for my first one and Im down to low 24's now.

Im still keen to try one of the faster parkrun courses. My home one has some really hectic hills and about 1.5k's of beach in it.

Crowded runs arent a problem for someone like you, just be near the front when it starts and go hard for the first half a k.
After that its only stronger runners left and the congestion is all behind you.

True, problem is I arrive too late. Next time I go I'll try and be there 15 minutes before it starts. Have to admit I do miss a nice and fast 5K.

Didn't even know about this until the revival of this thread. Have already registered and printed out my barcodes, SO must just do the same! :D

Anyone done the Botanical Gardens one, have marked that as my "Home Run"? We usually do 5km walks, so will be leading from behind if the majority are runners.

My wife does this down on PE beach on Saturdays.
It's becoming very busy though.

She enjoys it.
I couldn't be arsed, I'll stick to hockey.

I do the one at the botanical gardens: love it!

Its all kinds of people, I can pretty much say for sure you wont be at the back unless you walk very slowly!

Cool, we might see you there then!

Here is the Botanical Gardens one : http://www.strava.com/activities/260790922
I have only done R44 personally so I am not sure which is easier.

We have done a 5km walk there previously, think it was on New Year's Day last year (missed it this year as we were out of town), the route seems much the same and was also a "double-lap" then, so suspect it is the same. The uphill was fun the second time round, even some the runners were struggling.

I use MapMyWalk to track my pace etc., thought the Strava app looks interesting as well.

Generally do 5km in an hour, worst so far this year was 1:13, but still think that we did 6km there and not 5km (ACE in Eersterust). Was not tracking that walk with my app, so am not 100% sure on actual distance, but looking at average split times, 6km rather than 5 would make sense.

I have completed two runs at Bellville (Danie Uys Park, opp HS DF Malan). We average about 500 into about the 8 weeks it is going. We are running low on volunteers. We normally have some high school laaities doing sub 18's at the front.

I enjoy how quickly the stats become available a few hours later on the Saturday!

Getting those stats out is quite a complicated thing, syncing the readers with chips and filling in blanks for people that didnt have their barcodes.
When the run starts getting bigger then there will be more volunteers, its normally tough at first but starts to get a little easier with time.

I assumed it would peak at the start, then the attendance would drop...I see my logic was dof (i.e. no logic!)

Botanical Gardens is a two lapper, with a pretty steep but fairly short hill about 2/3 round.

Get a good start on the grass into the first corner as the next Km or so is on a pathway which can get congested if you are in a bunch.

They generally get about 500 people.

Yep, remember both for the New Year's event. Second time round, people started spreading out so wasn't so bad, which was great, as once I get a pace going, don't like to stop or slow down if I can help it.

One of the reasons that Parkrun has taken off in South Africa is the involvement of Discovery.

Discovery Vitality members get points for running Parkrun, and for volunteering.

New Parkruns are opening almost by the week. There are 50 at present, with Kimberley opening on 21st March, and Polekwane 11th April, Oudtshoorn 18th April

Another will be opening soon at Fochville,
