Hi,

Is anyone experiencing huge latencies after hours and on weekends - in Parow area?

This been going on for more than a month...

YES!!!

I've been having issues on-and-off, but always racked it up to ISP problems. But then noticed this yesterday when my internet was pretty much useless:

1 1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.200
2 3 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1
3 550 ms 306 ms 613 ms cdsl2-ctn-vl2276.ip.isnet.net [196.38.72.125]
4 506 ms 337 ms 337 ms 196.35.115.136
etc...

Logged ticket with ISP. They confirmed my suspicions that it looks like oversubscribed exchange and suggest that I contact Telkom (my line is with Telkom).

Is this even worth attempting to talk to Telkom? I can just see how far I'll get with the Telkom call center :(

PS: Today is better - around 90ms pings first hop.

hmmm nothing here , i think i connected to dslam there at the post office , even know im in parow north , which should be same one as yours.

I am connected to the PAROW (WPAW) Exchange. See URL http://www.broadbandstats.co.za/exchange/WPAW

Sgs you should log a fault with Telkom... I logged a fault and the next day I got contacted - He replaced all the lines at my house and down the street; did not fix the problem though... Only recently discovered that this problem is caused by a congested exchange (reading on forums) - problem is only after hours and over weekends. Early mornings or very late at night the pings are 100%.

The faults I am logging now are resolved without reason :(

I'm in De Tijger area. A friend across McIntyre in Parow North has zilch problems, so there are definitely multiple exchanges or DSLAMS at play here.

Agree it's just AH and weekends.

Logged online fault with telkom and have yet to receive a ref number. Guess I'll have to phone the call center to log this then...

yep in parow north also 100% here .

Yesterday mine was fine again with 14ms pings to the first hop.

I'll check again tonight - no point in logging a fault again if I cannot reproduce the problem :(

So, after a few weeks of respite, last night the exchange munchers fired up their leech-boxes again (they were probably all away on holiday), and back around rolls the 330ms pings, half line-speed transfers and packet loss causing pages not to load.

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/2823654108 (This is on a 2mbit line.)

The fault I logged last time was closed because "ADSL is a best effort service, so get lost." I have again reported a fault this evening.

I just want reliable HTTP - is that too much to ask? In short, I'm fed up and if they don't resolve this (they won't) I think I'm going to downgrade my ADSL until either the problem goes away or until I can find a reliable alternative. It they don't want to provide the service I'm paying for, then I'll just vote with my wallet...

power west has very good wug coverage :P

Our exchange in La Lucia (KZN) has been congested for the better part of 9 months now.

Best you get used to it because Telkom do NOTHING about it.

Yeah sgs - same by me; few weeks of no problems and now again...300+ latency. I have logged a fault on Saterday night, no update yet... :(

My latency is around 300+ at 7pm. By 9pm its around 660 with packet loss. Slightly higher latency I can live with if they have a timeframe to upgrade & resolve. The packet loss is unacceptable.

They contacted me yesterday morning and then assigned a technician to investigate. Lets see what happens.

sgs will you please let me know if your problem has been alleviated :)

Update: Telkom confirmed that this is related to congestion on the exchange & that they are working on a resolution.

Nothing changed yet - but my fault was also not closed & is still open. (So there's a feint bit of hope left there.)

Aside: my latency was so bad 30 mins ago that name lookups from my ISP's DNS started timing out. Never thought things could get THAT bad :wtf:
