Pay-TV smackdown

What channels can you actually get free from that site? It doesn't really say.:confused:

Edit: Saw now thanks, not much.

Oops, just went there myself - poll closed - sorry. But at least you get an idea of the FTA offerings they thinking of bringing out (& what MC is ripping us for). They haven't started yet with any as far as I'm aware - but when they do tho .....

Just some food for thought!!
ARE THEY ALL JUST PART & PARCEL OF THE SAME OMNIPOTENT MULTI-NATIONAL CONGLOMERATE?
Has 'SkyNet' ALREADY BECOME 'SELF-AWARE' and has 'The Rise of The Machines' ALREADY BEGUN?

Ivan ....

Very interesting links

Got any links for the early history of the start of M-NET. Who were those media groups that got together to start it.

Can one buy shares in these companies ? I guess that that is the best way to find out the financial side of things -- apart from the SARS -- although I do not put much store by them -- Look at the whole Brett KEBBLE saga.

Very interesting looking at the Directors. I wonder how deep the SA -- Netherlands links actually go ? Seems to be a LOT of old Dutch money ties to SA. (NASPERS -REMBRANDT - VOLKSKAS -- probably a whole lot more)

Certainly worth some serious research by the Economic History and Forensic guys.

How will they finance themselves then, ads?

MNET was started by Naspers wasn't it?

@ Digecho

I am using a PVR that I purchased two weeks after the PVR was launched, but had to register in a relative's name, as I was renting a flat from him, and he already had a DSTV SingleView installed that I was using - it was FAR LESS paperwork to keep it in his name & just pay the monthly subs via bank transfer, than to go through the whole convoluted 'transfer of ownership' rigmarole with MC's 'Customer Service', and end up with double billing, cancelled subs, errors, etc.!!!!!
I don't understand. Where does a 'transfer of ownership' come into it in this case? He had his decoder, you bought yours new. Sounds like you became a new customer at that time. Had you subscribed under your own name then MC would have seen that you are a subscriber?

Naspers is publically traded, isn't it?

Personally, I think the whole regulatory process in this country would be far more interesting and enlightening to research.

Sorry if I sound like a rampant free-market capitalist, but I honestly believe that an open market for pay TV is a far more laudable goal than simply bashing MultiChoice on forums. You're wasting your breath (and bits :) ) if you hammer DStv - they're just doing what any other company would do in the same regulatory environment.[1] And you certainly don't land up with a free market through tedious, drawn-out licence application processes, that cost a lot, and have to be scrutinised as to their 'viability' by idiots. Let the market decide on 'viability'.

Free markets have a wonderful way of rewarding companies that provide customer satisfaction, and punishing companies that don't, while at the same time placing downward pressure on prices, and increasing product qualilty.

[1] Even in the absence of competition, they do seem to have brought new products to market, when there was absolutely no market pressure to do so.

Stoopid, stoopid ICASA.

@ Dax

The DSTV SingleView WAS ALREADY in the flat when I moved in - and was registered @ MC in his name - all I did when I got the PVR, was cancel the SingleView on their system, and get the PVR activated - ON HIS EXISTING ACCOUNT!

I had previously been a MC subscriber since July 1987 when I got my 1st MNET decoder, and also got DSTV just after it was launched in 1996!

I sold my DSTV decoder to a family friend a couple of years ago, and the old flat I shared also had DSTV installed under the landlord's name, so I did not bother to register the PVR I had purchased in my name - the 'transfer of ownership' red tape @ MC was just not worth the hassle!

I did however register this information on their website when I joined the DSTV forums, so I fail to see how Jackie Rakitla could state that I was NOT a subscriber on their system - as they already had the account number tied in to my forum login information!!!

Yet another case of MC not getting their facts straight!!!

Yes, you've said that already. :)

So, there's no record that you own that PVR? I couldn't do it that way- what if it got stolen? I like my stuff registered to me. :)

I did however register this information on their website when I joined the DSTV forums, so I fail to see how Jackie Rakitla could state that I was NOT a subscriber on their system - as they already had the account number tied in to my forum login information!!!
I think they mean that the subscriber is the one who's name is on the account. Technically, if your name is not on the account, you're not a subscriber, regardless of who's doing the bank transfer.

Yet another case of MC not getting their facts straight!!!
Well, their interpretation sounds perfectly fine to me. You could have fixed that one little niggle by simply subscribing under your own name (red-tape or no red-tape), and then they would not have been able to class you as a non-subscriber. *shrug*

@ dax

Points taken & noted - but at least NOW I will be OFF THEIR SYSTEM ('subscriber' or 'non-subscriber' as the case may be) FOR GOOD THIS TIME AROUND!!!!

I have managed to get a friend to buy my PVR - and I will wade through ANY red tape necessary to ensure that it is FULLY de-registered off of my uncle's name on MC's system (and mine on the DSTV forums - LOL!!), and that the PVR account is then transferred in its entirety to the NEW owner - ASAP!!!!

I agree, remember initially DSTV operated without a licence which essentially means any other company could presumably have done the same, so its not as if they were a government protected monopoly. Let anyone who wants to enter the market be free to do so and if they crash and burn that's their problem.

@ ivork

I enjoyed the posting you made on the DSTV forum earlier this evening - ROTFL!!!!!

I guess that pretty much sums up the current (and no doubt, any future) situation @ MC in a nutshell!!

I wonder if your access to the DSTV forums will also be blocked as from tomorrow - due to you contravening their 'restrictive' terms & conditions of usage - their 'SEE NO EVIL - SPEAK NO EVIL - HEAR NO EVIL' policy!!

lets not forget R500+ per month in your pocket!

You have no idea the feeling Bradowllama - worth the 500 bucks even if i didn't get it in my pocket - thats just an extra bonus! :D

Never again will i pay for all those pile of cr@p channels.
No way Hozay
Just the sport which is a pain i have to go to pub etc
(which is actually quite nice to be honest)

No doubt! Spot the worry in my eye....

I did PM you.

If you click'ed on my sig you would probably understand why I'm so fed up with their BS!

[Edit] that's OK, I made a copy and will post it here if they wakkit. This is not a communist forum and RPM and the MODS won't kill your post unless it's blatantly racist or offensive etc. And welcome to MyBroadband btw.

I agree about the "Free-Markets" BUT how "Free" are they really

At the moment in SA do we have a "Free-Market" when it comes to Telecoms and DSTV  In any case I think that NOCHOICE have picked up bad habits from SABC -- pay for content once -- play it over and over to death -- charge consumer for every repeat -- pocket the difference as if it was honest profit. WHAT do you think they would do if you sent them LAST YEARS CHEQUE .......:D

Or do we rather have every kind of regulatory body and all kinds of other intrusive legislation ( BEE)

I stand by my statement that MCH were able to achieve a monopoly position BECAUSE of Gov legislation -- which is still pretty much in place. No-One picked up on my reference to the ADULT channel guy up in Gauteng -- and the subsequent court case. ( Which has HUGE wider implications for the whole legal system in SA )

Can someone who knows the history intimately comment here. I am not so sure that they did operate without a license -- perhaps "de-facto" but NOT "de-jure" I am pretty sure that in those days there WERE still broadcast licences -- as there are today.

We have as many if not more Gov regulations and interference in the market as we had under the old regime :D:(

ANYONE have a link to the inside history of MCH -- MIHH -- history of DSTV in SA ???? Could be the basis of a interesting little book.

There's no denying SA broadcasting in particular and the SA economy in general is far from a free market, but I don't think anyone was arguing that it was, rather that it should be. MNET was given a monopoly which obviously made it much easier for DSTV to launch.

There were broadcast licences but AFAIK they didn't apply to satellite.
