Hi all, was wondering whether anyone could help me with a PC problem I've been having:

My PC turns on, no beeps, nothing on the screen and the CPU fan isn't spinning. I've tried the usual steps such as removing RAM and checking for beeps, unplugging the graphics card, replacing the power supply and unplugging all drives, but still nothing. I've had this problem before, but last time it miraculously started working by itself again!

Any ideas, anyone?

remove all your add on cards and boot with only the motherboard and basics do you get a beep tone if not then you have a faulty bios or motherboard. if you do get a beep tone remove the ram and install another dimm and retry still no post then your board is fried an / or bios corrupt. all that could be faulty is your power supply ram motherboard , bios, or your screen card / monitor. test your monitor on another working PC / laptop , if the monitor works, then rule that out. its a simple test of elimination , do the same with ram gpu , motherboard etc. if all this works then i would think that the new power supply is the culprit.

Check the silly things first - check all connectors are plugged in properly, as well as RAM and any PCI devices you may have. From there... with no beeps? I'd lean towards PSU or motherboard problems, and if both of those are fine the RAM or CPU may be dead.

Thanks for the info, already checked monitor and all connections - the beeping is intermittent with everything removed - sometimes it does beep, then switch the pc off and on again and its dead - found that the heatsink on the cpu is very hot, but the fan won't spin up??? Very strange :(

re-oiled the fan and checked with a bench power supply - it spins up fine, also checked psu voltages - red gives 5.22V, yellow gives 11.99V on my multimeter. Tried removing the battery, and also resetting the CMOS, but all to no avail. What I find so strange is that all this happened before, and so I left it alone for a few weeks (its not a primary pc), then blew out the dust with compressed air and it worked fine...until now, where I'm back to square one.

Reset the CMOS several times to no effect (there's a CMOS reset button on the motherboard) and checked the battery - its indicating 2.90V. I don't think its possible to re-flash the bios without being able to get the pc to start up?

maybe theres a short on the board with the circuits?

if you happen to have another motherboard test everything on that and see if it works :P or check if a friend has similar motherboard to test on

Does sound very much like a dead mobo. Like power just intermittently getting through the board.
Just hate it when things die.. So sad and unfortunate :(
Plus the pain of having to figure out what has died

Have you tried another PSU?. Sometimes they are damaged & might even turn a few of the internal fans but not show anything on the screen making it ''look'' like the pc has come on....
