I access the Internet at home via Cybersmart (who resell Telkom ADSL) and Mweb at work (who also resell Telkom ADSL). Now, for at least 2 months, I've experienced intermittent issues with packet loss when accessing google, but not other sites.

Home and office are at different locations and another friend (who's experiencing the same) is in another City, which indicates that this problem has little to do with the line itself. Also, the problem persists across browser platforms and computers.

So.... there you have it.

Has anyone else experienced the same?

P.S. MWeb have the gall to tell me to contact Telkom to resolve the issue. Why pay them at all? I would've subscribed to Telkom in the first place if I wanted appalling service, but it appears I've simply paid more for the same.

MWeb, in particular, intercept all Google DNS requests, and if you are capped (internationally), points your browser to their local landing page, where they try to sell you more bandwidth. It is quite scandalous. Although unlikely, it is possible that this interception is behind your intermittent problems accessing Google.

Out of interest I'd like to know:

Does this happen on the Internet Solutions and Verizon networks as well, or only on the SAIX network?

That would be interesting to know - I'm considering setting up a router to bundle two lines, one via SAIX and another via IS, so the above info would be useful. I host a server at Verizon and the quality of their bandwidth is poor, based on experience (luckily it's a secondary server only). I'm just hoping that Seacom's imminent launch will change the prehistoric broadband landscape here in SA.

I digress. Let's get to the bottom of this issue and find a solution, even if it means using IS rather than SAIX.

At work its the normal slow, and work runs IS. SAIX has the huge hassles, to the point that its unusable.

Can anyone report experiences while accessing google via Telkom leased line? I assume leased line customers aren't shaped like ADSL users. Probably where the issue originates (shaping).

EXACT same issue at work. CONSTANT timeouts connecting to anything google (including many google adsense or analytics sites)

We are on DSL 4 meg... IS backbone at work.

The strange thing is.. i dont get this issue from home (SAIX or IS)

Its been going on for 2-3 months

Same problem, also about two months. I recently migrated to the Axxess semi-shaped product (IS) and it made no difference. I had it on Telkom and on Axxess SAIX connections.

The most annoying part now is that my iGoogle page doesn't properly load all the RSS feeds I have added to it.

Try accessing the AdSense setup and reports - a nightmare approaching the old days of dial up.

I have resorted to using a 3G connection to check AdSense reports.

Now, maybe someone from Google can take up the cudgels as I am sure they are losing out on revenue when ads fail to display, not to mention publishers abandoning their efforts as well as advertisers not seeing a return.

I simply withdrew from the Adsense rip off as well as Analytics and have a happy Google-free website that people are prepared to pay to join. Subscriptions in the first month of operation exceeded the earnings from three years of time wasted with Adsense. I have noticed fewer and fewer sites are showing Google ads these days.
