Thanks muchly for the quick tips, gents. Your advice arrived just in time.
I plopped a handful of lightly-oiled frozen chips in the Philips and let the machine hum for ten minutes. The chips didn't seem properly done so airblasted them for another three, then another three. By this time everyone had built their boerie rolls so I had to serve the chips. On the way to the table I tasted a few and must confess I wasn't impressed. In fact, it was rather disappointing. Maybe it's the way I pressed the button. Fortunately two junior relatives were at hand and they eventually scoffed the lot after a liberal dousing of Universal Omnicondiment aka All Gold Tomato Sauce.
The rest of the packet of McCain Slap Chips is now parked in the bottom freezer, awaiting an executive decision on their fate.
PS. I understand the science and theory of cooking. It's the practical art part I sadly have no experience in. Meat on coals is another matter entirely.
