Hi

I would like to understand dual sim advantages.

The idea is to get rid of my vodacom contract.

Too much call time. Too little data.

Instead I am thinking of getting a data contract on one sim and pay as you go for calls on another sim.

Is this possible?

Regards Johan

Sounds legit
Not sure myself how it works
I did do the dual sim thing last year but got very confused on it and I was sending personal whatsapps from wrong phone all the time and people were like WTF si this porno stuff?
I have a personal phone number and a work number
So now I just have 2 phones again like I use to in the old days

But in your case you want a dual sim for data and that makes sense, Im not sure how this works but I will summon a Master that knows

It is indeed possible.

You set which sim is for data only and which sim is the default for calling.

Yes, that probably what most people use it for. You can assign which sim to use for calls and which for data.

You can also keep work/home sims and manage calls messaging depending on time etc.(doesn't work with all apps)

A dual sim works with Data on one sim and you choose which sim makes a call. I have MTN on one sim for Data only. My WhatsApp, internet etc uses Data from that sim. I use my Vodacom sim for my calls. Once setup, the savings are great. Best of both worlds.

You sed the

Nope, its all in android. Mine asks when I call or send smses which sim I want to use. I have set data to only use the one sim. No issues that I have experienced.
You can also just default to one and then long press on the number if you want to change it.

This is GREAT news. Txs.

If I can divert; getting a data deal is simple. But getting a call deal does not look simple. Can I assume you prefer pay as you go for calls?

There is the easier way...

Go for Telkom, change your plan to a Data card (will work same as normal) but you can buy data bundles for cheap ie 2gb of data for R49. Calls and sms work same as before.

Option B is the Telkom Sim Sonke option (great plan)

Either way switch most calls to whatsapp. It can save you a fortune. No big difference compared to a normal call as cost a fraction of the cost.

So you can use Telkom, subscribe to 2gb when out and about R49 or 5gb for R99. If you got fibre at home it switches to wifi when you get home.

Do it properly and you will spend about R100 pm on the phone at most normally.

I have a prepaid SIM in slot 1 and a R99 10gb contact with Telkom in slot 2. Works great!

Keep in mind that some phones only allow for a second sim OR a micro SD card. Not both.

I was thinking of getting a Cell C 50Gb (valid for 6 months) prepaid sim in slot 2.

My company pays the voice contract on Vodacom.

MTN Black Friday deals are also nice. Can go prepaid or month to mont for now until Black Friday. The nice thing about them is you can also data share with other MTN numbers.
