Please explain dual sim advantages

There is the easier way...

Go for Telkom, change your plan to a Data card (will work same as normal) but you can buy data bundles for cheap ie 2gb of data for R49. Calls and sms work same as before.

Option B is the Telkom Sim Sonke option (great plan)

Either way switch most calls to whatsapp.
Txs. How do you handle outside calls?

It's easy to call out on WhatsApp but external calls are a different story.

Hi

I would like to understand dual sim advantages.

The idea is to get rid of my vodacom contract.

Too much call time. Too little data.

Instead I am thinking of getting a data contract on one sim and pay as you go for calls on another sim.

Is this possible?

Regards Johan

My wife uses dual sim:

Sim1 - Vodacom TopUp 10GB anytime +10GB midnight, costing R100pm (Yeah for BlackFriday deals)

Sim2 - Telkom business prepaid - get's free minutes to landline and cell, costing her R200pm. Comes with 2GB of data as well.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 phone: Paid just over R3K last year for it. It's her 3rd Redmi Note and not our last.

We converted her business landline to the Telkom prepaid and best thing ever. She has had no problems and as we never travel outside of the reception zone (ringfenced to something like 300km from Cape Town).

She is saving a fortune as her dual SIM setup is now costing less than what Telkom landline use to cost.

Your experience will also be determined by the phone you use as the Redmi handles the SIMS seamlessly. She can easily allocate duties to specific SIMS, or both: data; voice; SMS; etc

My main contract ended and I phoned Vodacom to switch me to prepaid as I wanted to move over to FNB connect. The offered me my current voice package and doubled the data for 90% less a month.

I frequently travel abroad with my 24/7 clinical psychologist, and we both have dual-SIM phones so we can keep our SA numbers alive while also using foreign SIMs with in-country numbers.

I'd highly recommend moving to eSIMs.

Looks like the S20 Samsung has dual sim.
Yeah. So it might have 2 SIM slots, but the second one is 'hybrid'. This means that the second slot may be used for either the second sim, or for an sd card. So make sure that whatever phone you use already has enough onboard storage for your needs.

Keep MTN number on sim 1 use cheapest data sim 2.

When traveling keep MTN number sim 1 use international sim in slot 2 works wonderfully. will never go single sim again

Its brilliant invention, It (Dual sim) is really user friendly with newish phones, It indicates easily which one you are intending to use (data /calls) and plus thing is, you can set different ring tones for each sim.
I have a contract sim (Telkom) and a prepaid sim (MTN)

Hence I have my work sim in my personal phone and just ignore calls once it goes after hours as I can tell by the ring tone which sim is being called.

ESim? Must investigate that.

Have MTN sim in for calls, and rain uncapped for data in my new OPPO.

I am using a s20 dual sim.

slot 1 - work sim card

slot 2 - personal

never get confused when responding to WhatsApp because I have WhatsApp for business (work sim) and normal WhatsApp (personal sim).

Receive and make calls on both - no issues.

My Huawei P20 Lite is dual sim - the downside with it is I would have to sacrifice the micro SD card to use it, so I haven't.

Side track - are they letting residential landline numbers convert to prepaid as well?

It's not a prepaid mobile option, it's a contract with a geographic limitation. Ours is 300km from Helderberg.

You will need to check with your local Telkom if they can port your number and what options they give you.

Exactly the reason for getting a dual sim phone.

Keep your primary number in SIM 1 and use SIM 2 for data. You can even keep switching the second SIM based on the best deals available.

I also have the prepaid Sim1 and data contract Sim2 setup, my only problem is when talking to FNB on the prepaid sim and they send me a something to approve on the app, the data connection doesn't work, think it's because I'm talking on the prepaid sim. This is a Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro setup.

Am I doing something wrong?

Another benefit which I don't think anyone has mentioned yet - dual sim means one less phone to carry about and charge.
Company replaced landlines with mobile contracts. Handed us a phone and a sim card.
Popped the company sim into my dual sim phone and viola! Only carry one phone around.
Come weekend if I'm not on call, I turn off the company sim and back on Monday morning.
Simplify.:)
