Recently I've been having a serious problem whereby my pppoe connection idles after a random period of time (usually 45 min to 2 hours). When it dies, I can't disconnect\reconnect, can't browse or ping anything and HAVE to restart my pc to fix the problem. It's not a network- or router-related problem, as my friend who is lanning with me is not experiencing this issue at all. I scoured pages of google results with no solution.

I've done everything from updating drivers to virus scanning (with avast, bitdefender and trend housecall) but to no avail. I also ran a trace on my connection, but the drops aren't indicated in the logs. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to fix this?

Thanks

Welcome Lunch!

Have you logged this with Telkom and what has their findings been? What do the logs for your router say? Post it here and we might be able to throw a few suggestions your way.

Are you running a non-updated version of XP Sp2?

Think there was a Generic Host error that causes these kind of issues. Haven't ever heard of it happening without showing you the error message when the service crashes tho.

this has been happening to me too... if i leave my PC on without anything using the internet connection it does what Lunch is saying...

Hi guys thanks for the responses

It's not a problem with Telkom, because as I said other people on the network are not having this issue (They are using the same router and adsl account that I am). I am unable to access the router as it isn't my house, but I'm not sure that this would help as the problem is limited to me alone.

i am running a non-updated sp2 yes, I suspect this could be the primary cause. I'm busy dl'ing sp3 now. You are right though - normally it throws a Generic Host error, but there is no error whatsoever. Nothing in event logs either.

This is different to my problem, as my connection drops even when not idle (I could be in the middle of torrenting, downloading or gaming and it will disconnect)

Fixed by installing sp3. Thanks guys

Mmmmm.. Seems I am having the exact same error as Lunch. PPPoE connection just dies and I cannot disconnect it at all. On top of that, it disables my audio out codec as well as refreshes my task bar to 1 line (meant to be 3). Is this a virus, malware problem, I have no idea?

Very odd indeed. I will try SP3.

FAnks.
