Pre-order iPhone

So the fact that Steve Jobs indicated a world wide release to the countries at the same time the 11th July doesn't mean anything. You would think vodacom would try to milk everyone for everything and take advantage of this. Perhaps you guys need a better marketing team.

Really? A world-wide release on the 11th of July? Shows how little we know.

This is exactly what I alluded to in my post above. People get half a story, get it completely wrong and then post it as fact. Next minute it's taken as gospel.

Again, whatever anyone said, there are NO dates for the local release of the iPhone yet. Got no idea where customercare got the 20th of July from, I'll set them straight. I guess they got it from some zealous journalist.

Right now all we know is that Apple is releasing it to SA and we believe it will be this year. But a lot of stuff must still happen before you'll get your grubby paws on it. :) It's not a normal phone release and many things must be put into place to appease the great, gleaming-white god.

...And we've had 3G iPhones for testing for quite a while, btw.

V3G, in a previous post you said the 3G iPhone will be released to Vodacom on 20 July. That seems like a contradiction to the quoted text above? (Or am I missing something?)

Edit: Me blushing, It was someone else that said that. My bad.

@ Shardie

I'm guessing if you have to unlock the phones then the apple warranty will no longer be valid. That would be a deal breaker for me. Well that and the fact that i'd want some way to guarantee they are genuine Cupertino produce...

Well,

I will be waiting for the release from Vodacom, consider the price and perhaps upgrade my contract to the necessary contract to get the iPhone.

Sideline: When can one upgrade a contract? Only in 22months and the second time in 24months? Or can one upgrade the contract anytime and "reset" the 24months?

The iPhone 1 is problematic on Vodacom's network so I assume Vodacom still have to fix these issues which I guess affect the iPhone 3G as well.

So believe V3G when he says there is no confirmed release date.

Errr I think it should be out by the dates that were confirmed.
I also think it will be around the same price as a P1.

:(

So no concrete news about pricing or release date at all then really?

No, sorry. We're working as fast as we can but everything is not in place yet. Remember dealing with the real world, with established operators, with complex price plans (i.e. outside the US) is a new experience for Apple as well. ;)

At least they'll be able to sort out most the issues with the first wave countries, before it's our turn.

So it will be quite some time then. :p

Hope not, but I don't want to commit to any dates as we're still in a process and anything can delay it. Like stock availability.

Cool, fair enough.
It will be interesting to see what the prices are when it does arrive. I am not going with cheap :(

iPhone out 20 July
Alastair Otter, MyBroadband 09 June, 2008 01:12:00

Vodacom has confirmed that the popular Apple iPhone will be released in South Africa on 20 July. Stuff editor Toby Shapshak confirmed the announcement on his blog.
OK, so this is incorrect then according to vodacom3g...

Yup.

I'll check with Toby where he got the date from.
Is he getting kick-backs from Vodacom (jokes) cause that is kinda irritating since u say its not true. ONly reason I haven't ended my contract with Vodacom is that I thought for sure the iPhone was coming out in July and I might as well hang on to see what price it was offered at.

The ONLY date that was ever published is the 11th of July for the first wave of countries (and SA is not in the the first wave). This date was announced by Apple.

After that overactive imaginations, speculations and the rumour mill took over (this forum is a great example :)) and dates, pricing, packages, etc. were being decided upon by the user community.
