Pre-order iPhone

The ONLY date that was ever published is the 11th of July for the first wave of countries (and SA is not in the the first wave). This date was announced by Apple.

After that overactive imaginations, speculations and the rumour mill took over (this forum is a great example :)) and dates, pricing, packages, etc. were being decided upon by the user community.

We're not deciding upon prices and packages...merely trying to air our views on where we think it should/will be priced ;) , but don't let us stop it from being any cheaper or being released any quicker.

@v3g

You mentioned the testing the phone has to go through and some special network requirements. Care to elaborate? Also, how is the testing progressing so far?

Expect to pay in the region of R349 to R599 / month for the iPhone +R1500pay-in and this does not included the data package which you will need - so a Vodacom 500MB for R199/month.

Breakdown:
- Pay in = R1500
- Voice = R500
- Data = R199

Grand Total = R700 / month + once off R1500 payin
Thats tooo much!!

This is a base estimate on where we should be aligning our expectations...thats all. We shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking its going to be on a weekend everyday or similar package. Consider other PDA/Smartphones in the same category and determine for yourself what a reasonable guestimate would be.

No, sorry. We're working as fast as we can but everything is not in place yet. Remember dealing with the real world, with established operators, with complex price plans (i.e. outside the US) is a new experience for Apple as well. ;)

At least they'll be able to sort out most the issues with the first wave countries, before it's our turn.

Is it looking like an August release date for Vodacom? Pricing info, even if tentative, would be appreciated. If the contract that it's going to be on is going to be really expensive, I'd like to know sooner rather than later if I am wasting my time chained to the beast which is chained to the Beast...

Well according to the 2 Vodashops in my area, the one said next month, the other said on August the 7th they would receive the details on the pricing and packages etc. and availability would be later in August....

Is there anywhere (retailer-wise) I can play around with the iPhone (3G or otherwise) to see if it might be worth waiting for? Or is the only way for me to find someone I know who has one and ask them if I can put my fingerprints all over it?

I doubt you will get anywhere at Vodacom.
So Im guessing you gonna have to find a friend with a non-3G one, and have a look at it.

No chance of seeing a 3G version, unless someone has already brought one in.

Maybe look if someone is selling a 2nd-hand one. At least it gives you the opportunity to play with one, but I've got no idea how different the new one will be.

Have you tried the Apple Shop at the Waterfront? (I'd call them first though)

Do you get to "test" new phones like this for vodacom or do you know who does? That person has an awesome job :D :D :D

So I guess it wasn't 20 July then??

Vodacom3g said no. So even though we were secretly hoping he was lying to us and was gonna spring a surpise. Sadly no...

And we do not even have pricing yet. This means we still got a bit of a wait. :(
