Good decision, there will always be opposition to transformation but ultimately change will be implemented.

How about we change it so that women aren't allowed out of the house? Afterall, there will always be opposition to transformation, but ultimately change will be implemented...
Or maybe not all change is good, and we have to look at the repercussions of the changes we want to make.
If this becomes the case then a certain period of time (say a whole year) would be dedicated to dealing with a particular challenge facing the country until all challenges have been resolved one by one. One imperative doesn't and shouldn't render other imperatives unimportant.
And calling a place Pretoria is something that needs to be changed because...?
Are you saying it was not wrong that a Western name was enforced on Africans and their place of dwelling?
I can only assume that you're implying that it's wrong that a western name was enforced on africans and their place of dwelling. I can then only assume that you must think it wrong to force an african name on westerners and
their place of dwelling.
BTTB that is the solution the government is proposing, but the minority are turning it down, they want the WHOLE area to retain its Apartheid era name.
It's not an apartheid era name.
The "extremely small proportion of the population" that you refer to is a good of way of defining those who oppose ranaming. Again those "bigger problems" do have their budget and shouldn't be used as an excuse to keep relics of the past. And it's interesting to note that the people who are most affected by the "big problems" are the ones who are supporting the name change and do not view it as a stumbing block to their problems getting attention.
Names should not be changed purely because they're relics of the past. As I've already said, Pretoria is not an apartheid era name. If you want to change the name, come up with some other justification.
IC with due respect I don't think it will be productive for me to engage in this debate with you if you can still genuinely pose such a question in this day and age.
It's a reasonable question; I suspect you merely aren't capable of answering it, as your rhetoric doesn't cover it.
Do you think the fact that it was named 1800s rather than say 1967 makes it acceptable to the majority?
So all names should be acceptable by the majority?
I hereby vote that we should all change Angelo's name to Piet - all in favour?
Are you concerned that it will cost money to change the name or is your problem the fact that that part of the country is now going to bear an African name. If your problem is the former, did you feel so strongly about African identities being stripped in favour of Western ones?
Funny, you seem to think it's OK for 'white' identities to be stripped away but when 'whites' do it to someone else, it's not OK... That's racist.
The renaming is more about Africans than it is about whites, it's is to restore the names that were there before occupation, sounds fair enough to me.
It's not a ****ing occupation. Occupations are made by people dominating a foreign area. Afrikaners did not occupy Africa in lieu of another nation or place. Afrikaners
chose to make this place their home. By definition, that
cannot be an occupation.
Yes old sport that and the fact that Africans want their names restored is the main motivation.
Then do the decent thing and restore it to the original San names. Otherwise you're just a hypocrite.
Renaming a city is not a priority. Period.
As a white who grew up in the Apartheid era your thinking is perfectly understandable.
As a rational statement, it's understandable.
Believe me in time Tshwane will be just as internationally recognisable as any other name, besides "international recognition" is not the motive for renaming locations.
Give or take a hundred years.

Nobody arguing in these threads have been able to successfully prove what Pretoria was named before it was founded as Pretoria
Damn! some people?..................for days forumites and Mods (including RPM) have been preaching for people to avoid personal attacks and childishness and here we go again, just because somebody doesn't agree/can't debate with me.
Accusing you of spewing Racist BS is not a personal attack, it's ridiculing your argument. They're two very different things.
That's possibly a whole independent debate for another thread, Im only referring to Blacks as Africans (not saying Whites aren't) if that's okay with you?
No, it's not OK. I'm white. I'm also an African. I love living here, and despite having a horrible government, and having to deal with a few really serious and worrying problems, I love this country. Labelling me with the name "westerner" suggests I'm not welcome here, and I resent that.

Okay one thing and one thing all caucasian people in South Africa must understand is that you are South Afircan, but you are not a Native! Period.
Rubbish. Humans all came from Africa - by this standard, everyone is a native African.
The alternative is that you have to admit that all of us, save the Khoi and San, are not native to this area.
All that's being chaged is a name, nothing is being taken away from you that was not yours in the first place.
If you really believe you're entitled to a non Afircan name on African soil then you clearly don't belong here and you'd do youself a favor and leave.
No, I think I'll stay long enough to watch you give all the land back to the San and Khoi.
No natives were consulted about naming the place Pretoria, it was just done. People should be glad you're even being consulted or even getting a say in the matter at all.
No natives were consulted in changing the name to Tshwane, either, then.

Nicely summarised ShockG, "let those with ears listen".
And let those with brains not be led to believe bullshirt.
Monty I'm very dissapointed with the way you conducted yourself in this thread but the last thing I will say to you is African places should and will get African names, if you prefer Western names feel free to leave and settle in Western cities with Western names (rightly so).
Ignoring your erroneous use of "western" :
Pretoria
is a "western" city. Afrikaners moved their, mixed their effort with the land, and in that regard made it as much theirs as anyone's.

No here's the thing you'll never be forgiven until you come right.
I fail to see how changing a name will be proof of "coming right".
The genral attitude on this forum (save for the few who don't falunder this banner) is that SA is going down the drain, as if it was so great before. It was great because the minority were in power, doing as they pleased when they pleased. Now that things are changed its going down the drain? :/
It's going down the drain because the people in power appear to be more interested in screwing everyone over for their own gain, rather than actually serving the people.
Believe it or not no, African shares any heritage with you.
We're all African. Some of us just travelled a little further than others. Some decided to come back. It is generally accepted within the scientific community that
all animals that are genetically of the race homo sapiens originated in Africa.
You want them to respect it when you did not respect theirs.
Oh, so it's not OK for someone to step on your heritage, but then you can step on theirs?
That's hypocrisy of a disgusting degree.
how you treated the people that were rightfully here you still want a say in how things happen.
I see - violently driving off the San was OK, and their lands that you stole was OK, because it's "rightfully" yours. What utter rubbish.
This is either extreme arrogance or irreproachable stupidity. I'm leaning towards the former, but make room for the latter.
It's you who is either incredibly stupid or extremely arrogant.
D.F Malan was changed to Beyers Nauder in honor of a man who made a difference. In honor of someone who was not a native but took it upon himself to fight against what was wrong and could rightfully call himself an African.

I thought whites couldn't be Africans because they weren't native?
Nobody is wiping out The history of whites, the ones worth honoring are being honored and the rest are being done away with.(Their monuments that is) Its that simple
Well, in that case Tshwane wasn't worth honouring either, since what he did was no more courageous than Andries Pretorius' actions.

I can argue with you until kingdom come BUT Tshwane is going to be the new name so deal with it!
Last I heard, the government had halted the change for the purpose of "cost assessment" sounds to me like it's not certain at all.
To All :
Gee, I have a suggestion, let's import all the San out of the Kalahari desert and bring them back here, and let
them rename everything here. That way no one can complain, problem solved!

(That is meant to be tongue in cheek, to point out the stupidity of the reasons used to justify the name change.)
