Price comparison - Uncapped ADSL

Perhaps these articles should have the title, "Daily Uncapped ADSL Comparison"?

the openweb thing seems a bit incorrect/open to misinterpetation. i got an email from Keoma stating that if you place an order on the site for that R219 it is NOT mweb cap, you have to request it. so if a normal consumer orders it then essentially they are using the IS backbone. just responding to that table that was posted in the aericle about the openweb backbone provider....

For the record, the accounts sold via our website are Internet Solutions based accounts, not MWEB. To purchase an MWEB account, please email me before signing up, as once we have created an IS based account, we cannot change it.

Have a great weekend friends!

Kind regards
Keoma Wright

the price confused me and a whole lot of other people i knew and we only found out with the problems IS was having this weekend. couldnt get more than 2kb on thursday for anything, any time of the day/night

Nice.. keep these comparisons coming. At least once every 2 weeks.

Suggestion: myBB should run a series of polls in the Forum, one for each major ISP (MWeb, Afrihost, IS resellers (collectively perhaps?), Vox, etc), to get statistical feedback from users on which is the best performing uncapped package.

Also, I would like to see 3 more columns added
- 1 column which summarises the AUP/FUP of each ISP/upstream provider (e.g. throttled at 30GB, 60GB, 100GB, or shaped & throttled after XXX, or dynamic throttling/shaping based on network usage)
- 1 column which specifies whether after-hours bandwidth is throttled, shaped, or unshaped.
- statistical results from poll for the specific ISP/upstream provider

This would make the article infintely more useful.

+1

SO if I sign up with the MWEB 384kbps uncapped incl line rental, does MWEB cover the telkom line rental or must I still do the line ordering through telkom? Sorry for the stupid question, n00b when it comes to adsl...

You still need to pay Telkom

How about a line graph as we go along, showing the trends in pricing, with each ISP in a different colour?
Would be a nice addition to the table.
So every month or so, the graph has another point added to it.

i could be on a wrong discussion, but it could be related. I am with Myisp on a 384/3 gig package from before they released their unlimited package. Before I could download torrents at a pretty good speed, but over the past weekend including last night speed is basically zero whilst the normal browsing and emails are at the normal speeds (constantly > 35KB. It seem like the capped people are now paying the price for the uncapped people. i could be wrong though.

Afrihost deal not so hot

A comprehensive roundup of the various uncapped offerings in the market.

Price comparison - Uncapped ADSL

I am disappointed about the Afrihost deal. I get the impression they rushed it to market and in order to stop their bandwidth being saturated they introduced reducing bandwidth as your consumption increases

For a 4Mb account

Basically after 60G they choke your line to 1024k
After 90G they choke it to 512k
After 120G they choke it to 384k
After 150G they choke it to 128k

Its not really a 4Mb uncapped account is it?
Hell, if I get choked to 512k I will stop using it.

Compare it to MWeb.

I understand that contention will happen. I understand the need to choke certain protocols.
But choking in a linear manner is just not viable.
I tend to be using the web in a more realtime mode during the week. Email, web traffic etc.
On the week-end I tend to download content. So my week-end consumption is high but I am using it when the network can handle it.

Mweb looks the way to go...

"should we not include Neotel?
They always said that we are spending too much on data. How do they now compare? "

Out of sight, out of mind. Sorry, but I just had to say that.

Methinks you're getting confused with shaped and unshaped. Not so?

Point is they were upfront about it and said if it doesnt suit you then ok, rather try somewhere else. Ya, theres the issue of calling it uncapped but thats an issue for the ASA. If 60gigs isnt enough then fair enough, move along.
I am glad though that there is someone like mweb who seem to be keeping up their end of the bargain so there is at least a choice of somewhere else to move to

As i mentioned in another thread. I don't think the particular offering is "less uncapped" or "not uncapped". The only label issue is the "4096" part. If Afrihost called it "variable speed uncapped" and priced it the same as Mweb's 512kpbs uncapped offering, guess what, everyone would see Mweb's 512k offering as the problematic one.....

...even DigiChilli got that "bursting" thing going, which is considered a good thing. Imagine if Afrihost called their 4096 uncapped package "128 uncapped BURSTABLE to 4096" (guaranteed burst while below certain thresholds) and asked your R500 for it . Is it less uncapped now? :D

Should be called heavily shaped / throttled, practically useless "uncapped" (with user limits) accounts :erm:
