Very good point.

Doesn't need to be a prostitute, a normal woman is raped and the attacker leaves money, so in court he can claim she sold him sex. How do you disprove his defence ? I mean Selling sex would them be legal

You disprove his defence by getting witnesses to confirm you are not a prostitute and have never earned any income from prostitution, and therefore even if he left money, he cant say he paid for sex, if you were not selling sex in the first place.
He would also have to prove you are a prostitute.

Likening prostitution to murder is such black & white mentality. Just because you find them both morally abhorrent, doesn't mean they can be lumped into the same basket.

"If we legalise prostitution, then we may as well legalise murder." Statements like these are beyond ludicrous.

LOL, who said that? I didnt read the whole thread. But ya, that is a crazy statement.

Yes you're right.

Still a nasty court case though. It will put the woman through even more emotional stress. Husband of the wife might not believe what is said even if she never sold sex. But that seed will be planted in his head. It will not be good case any which way.

With it being illegal such a defence would get him conficted without such a defence from him.

Just how I see it though.

Nobody said it directly. Hence my adding "statements like these."

Example:

So the reason for legalising it is because everyone is doing it and we do it for free usually? Lol that sounds like a really pure excuse.

I think i'm going to go rape, pillage and murder some people today. Everyone else is doing it. Let's make it legal!

In your article you spoke to a couple of prostitutes - ok, did you speak to ones who had become addicted to drugs? Did you speak to ones who had been in the trade for 10 years? Did you find ones who had been trafficked in from neighboring countries on false pretenses?

This sounds like you're describing destitute people working in most industries throughout the world! Come now. Ever seen what Wall Street traders get up to after hours?

Fact of the matter is, people who have nothing need to eat. They turn to prostitution and for some it's a stepping stone while for others it's a trap. I find the job no less disgusting than that of a streetsweeper and morality only comes into play if you look at premarital sex as a sin. What makes sticking your willy in someone any less serious than sticking your tongue down someones throat?

legalize it yes, people tend to do stuff a lot less if it is legal. Same goes for drugs, look at the dutch solution for drugs. And you kill the illegal trade of it. I doubt any women would "want" to go into prostitution either.

Wrong,

The Dutch is thinking of reinstating a ban on light drugs ;)

Oke cool ,who is paying for this case?

Prostitution will neva go way. Its been around for centuries. It wont stop just coz the Govt and society think its immoral, etc. Legalising will bring more control and ofcos taxes. Legalising prostitution will not necessarily encourage anyone to be a prostitute. Being at a legal age to drink alcohol doesnt not necessarily mean one should start consuming alcohol.

ummm

It is already 'underground', largely because it's 'underground', hence a desire to bring it 'above ground'.

i was meaning that they wouldn't want to pay tax so therefore the criminal underground element would still exist.

Legalize it, it's advertised openly in many newspapers such as Beeld and nothing gets done by the authorities. More than 100 ads in Beeld daily, would be easy to convict, but it does not happen, even being illegal. You can just as well legalize it.

What about the 40yo obese, honest ,hard-working, and single guythis guy is in a deep depression,, feels just so fed up wiith life, as he can't get any of that good stuff.

life is short. don't you think that it would be of the utmost cruelty to just leave this guy to suffer so deeply, when the cure is around the corner and a few notes away?

Sorry to hear your plight. ;):D

For it. Legalize prostitution. People who object on moral grounds, do you also oppose gay marriages? Are swingers evil people? Get off your high horses. Morality in general is defined by the way you were brought up which is in turn defined by ancient religious beliefs. Ridiculous. Who are you to judge the deeds of another and what puts you above them?

Personally, I wouldn't use a prostitute but I think people should have the choice, just like I believe people should have the right to choose their religion. Imagine if Christianity was outlawed because of its morals.

I get what you are trying to say but this isnt a case of us judging them with disgust. So if it came across that way in any of my posts it was not my intention. I do not judge them, i just can't agree to it being legalised because it goes against what i believe in and how i was brought up. That is my own opinion. Which is what the original poster asked for.

Even though i can understand posters comments about the girls being victimized. Legalising it probably would solve some of this but it would still happen because in life we all become victims to something at some point. Is there perhaps not another option to ensure these women get the safety they deserve without legalising the whole trade?

Could you link to your study?

It's the PDF report. Another article here quite useful.

Thanks I'll read these.

Yeah, just like booze regulation has not stopped Shebeens, Pedophillia and wife beatings.

Not sure what paedophilia has to do with alcohol abuse, but point taken nevertheless.
No not at all... erm.. I understood their situation better than you do and I totally understand why they do drugs when you look through the world they do. However, I still see their usage as a lower moral problem than those created by the criminalization of the industry.

You're fond of saying that you understand things better than I do, it's one of the things I enjoy most about our conversations. Anyway ignoring your overweening assumptions about my level of understanding, you haven't really dealt with my proposals at all. I've reiterated that I don't support the stigmatisation of prostitutes, or their inability to have legal recourse and protection from abuse. I contend that the legalisation of the trade does little to protect the women in reality, and actually furthers their exploitation by sanctioning the men who purvey it.

Listen to them then. Help them. Dont support an environment that leads to them being victims.

The environment that leads to them becoming victims is the prostitution trade itself. The government merely struggles to cope with it, sometimes in ineffectual ways. The reason that we have to protect prostitutes who get gang raped and enslaved is because prostitutes are unusually prone to gang rape and enslavement. That is the nature of the trade. Legalisation will not change anything.

Nobody said it directly. Hence my adding "statements like these."

Example:

I said that due to someone else saying it should be legal because everyone does it. I was being sarcastic not making an actual intellectual comparison.

Thanks for the reply. This is exactly what I'm referring to. Your belief and moral structure means you cannot agree with this practice. That's fine! What's not fine is that you need to force your beliefs down on others by saying they may not do something. I believe the fact that it's illegal is wrong and the choice should be theirs. If you don;t agree with it, that's fine but you must not stop them from doing what they deem to be right.

If we, as a society, allowed ourselves to be led by the morals of peoples belief systems, all women would be wearing burkas(sp?) and not be allowed to show anything but their eyes. Would you be opposed to that? Many people consider Western women to be immoral because of their lifestyles.

All I'm saying is, think about something from someone else's perspective before condemning their actions. The world would certainly be a much more peaceful place! :)

Is this not exactly what currently dictates that Murder, theft, corruption, rape, child abuse, wife abuse and a whole lot of other stuff on a few hundred pages are agaist the law ?

Morals I mean.

Exactly. If you can't say that one thing is immoral, how can you say that another is? What is particularly immoral about any of the things pitbull listed? Don't shove your artificial morality down my throat. I can steal from you if I choose to.
