What like being sent to her room or being grounded. I dunno but I found the thought of a klap far more likely to stop me misbehaving.

Why? If you can hit the child on the buttocks why can't you hit them in the face? Why not the soles of their feet or the outer/inner thigh?

They were a joke. Absolutely hilarious. When I did get caught I chose caning over the alternatives. But the important thing was to learn how not to get caught.

Well, maybe its just me, but I think a smack in the face is more like getting beaten than spanked. And as for the soles of the feet or inner outer thigh, it just makes me think of Pulp Fiction. Touching in a familiar way, thats gonna get you thrown out a window, and if you do get bust that way, chances are you're gonna get charged with something other than smacking your kid.

They obviously did not know how to dish it out at your school (or you enjoy a little spanking :) ). There was not one dude in my old school that would have opted for the caning (and I went to a rough school in the south of jozi so we're not talking about a buch of pussies here)

Am I right in assuming that generally black South Africans don’t believe in hitting their children if they did something wrong?

IF I as a white South African have to respect their culture surly they have to respect mine. I was spanked when I was a child and I am spanking my children if they do something wrong, it’s my culture to do so.....

Assault is against the law, no matter what you prefer to call it, spanking, beating, klapping... it all boils down to one thing, physically injuring someone against their will.

Geez, if you're smacking a child to injure him, then there is something very wrong. A disciplining smack does not injure someone. This whole thing is getting confused I think. Beating your child is bad, causing bruising and injury is bad, a little sting never hurt anyone (for an extended period of time). I think everyone (government or lack thereof) assumes that when a child is disciplined it is being thrashed within an inch of its life.

It also boils down to preventing the child doing the same. Please dont tell me you nearly died or were emotionally scarred at school...
