R59 Xtreme Data Nokia service

I think this is going to be big.

Not for me, or you guys, but for the guy on the street who basically use facebook and WhatsApp.

We are very seldom the target market for these things.

I was thinking the same thing. I expect a lot of WP7 phones will be sold to teenagers in the future, unless iPhone & Android get similar offers soon.
(yes I know all of the current eligible Nokia phones are Symbian)

For the average Joe on the street this isn't too bad, if you're only accessing things like Facebook, Mxit, Whatsapp etc. it'll be plenty of data but for anyone that uses their phone for work or media sharing it just simply isn't enough.

My phone easily chows through 250mb/month just on mails never mind any form of web surfing/streaming/media sharing I use it for.

How much data does the average BB person use(when used within T&C's) and what speeds are they getting?

the problem with that comparison is... on your nokia your phone will "check" your email, similar to outlook express did in 1998, every say 5 minutes, this will use a LOAD of data/battery, whereas a BB gets told 'here is a new email, come download it now' and within a split second of the person sending it you have your email, if you get no emails for a week, your phone would've use virtually no data on email. so yeah 100mb for that kind of setup would barely cover 1 email account.

Why only for Nokia? How do they provision this so that it only works on Nokia? Surely if you can figure out what the APN is etc...then you can do the settings manually on any phone and use it? I dont get why MTN and Nashua is Nokia bef@k.

Well Vodacom did say average usage on BIS is 100Mb so this service should satisfy most users (those who have not yet discovered the internet beyond facebook and twitter).

Correction. They're bef@k, period.

I would rather pay R200 a month for it, full speed until you reach 1GB and after 1GB throttled to 256kbps and everything open like youtube etc... But back to real life where I am forced to have a BB 9800 on a prepaid cell-c sim and my contract in a iphone. :(

do you have wifi everywhere you go? even when your in the shops? on the way to / from clients? doubt it...

I spend maybe 10 - 15% of my time outside of a wifi area...

My house is covered, my office is covered, my friends places are covered.....

So is this available on prepaid? How does one sign up?

So in MTN's and Nashua Mobile opinion... unlimited = anything between 100-160mb...

MTN/Nashua Mobile... your marketing team are idiots!

Good question.

Currently I get a R49 data bundle that gets me 100mb. This will essentially get me 60mb + more for R10 more.
I don't use things like Youtube because its a heavy data user in any case.
I guess if it's just for a month it won't be that bad, just to test it out

Somehow I doubt that it will be on Prepaid ever.

I think until the day we get unlimited fast internet access at our homes / offices, we just won't get decent unlimited mobile offerings. Nashua (and VC and MTN) is too afraid that offering a fast uncapped mobile connection will result in some people using it to torrent and download huge amounts of data. If said people could do it at home using their very fast fibre / ADSL connections, then there's no reason to abuse the mobile networks for it.

Re-Wifi .. I only started using wifi since moving to iPhone without the BIS service i had on BB. Setting up wifi at home and work helps a lot in reducing my data used. without it, i'd use a LOT

This service looks crap until you read the fineprint - for once, the fineprint is better than the bold print :) It seems if you use it only for intended services (Browsing, Internet, Social Networking and Instant Messaging) it really is unlimited and that doesn't count towards the 100meg cap.

Sure, it's not nice having all these rules, etc ... but ... R59, guys! It's a REALLY good first volley in non-BB cheap uncapped mobile internet. Now hopefully they extend it to the Nokia WP7 devices.

They would always abuse mobile networks.. the advantages over fixed is always better(mobility, speed in SA, latency isnt too bad either anymore). 2ndly uncapped mobile internet is not unlikely for surfing, email, im etc. I'm of the opinion it's easily done.. but the expectation that it will be under 100mb is ridiculous.

Was looking at the iPhone popular apps .. Onavo is extremely popular.. what does it do? compress incoming data + pictures. <-- when a 3rd party has to offer something like this which is suppose to be for roaming (to keep charges down) but i see apparently its more popular for on net usage in SA.. HAHAHA

RE Elvis.. thats kinda interesting, someone should clarify with them. If it is excluded from cap then it will good.. but then MTN's version said it would count

I get what everyone is saying about the 100MB threshold, but again are you looking at this from your own personal users opinions or the actual general public this product is aimed for? I wouldn't use this because 1. I use a smartphone 2. I use wi-fi mostly with backup 3G data, I have never needed getting a Blackberry for its data solutions. This is not aimed at smartphone users right now, my opinion its aimed at a waaaaaaay lower LSM target market than MyBB users using Nokia smartphones (Most BB users btw use the entry level Curve not Bold not Torch). If its on prepaid that would make sense, if its on contract Nashua Mobile just shot themselves in the foot and giving Blackberry and BIS market share. They won't even make a dent!

lets work this out-
100MB x 12 months = 1.2 GB
R59 x 12 months = R708
so you're paying R708 for 1.2 GB of data

Cell C R599 for 3 GB and youtube isn't blocked
