R8,500 data bill for Windows 10 updates

Do anybody know if Vodacom gives instructions on how to disable automatic updates?

Because I feel it is in their domain if they give advice like that. Especially because they do supply computer equipment and phones with contracts.

Thanks will have a look into it.
If they supply Windows 10 computer, they are equally responsible.

No, they are unable to give instruction, as there is no way to disable automatic updates on the Home versions. Setting up a "metered connection" doesn't stop automatic updates, only slowing it down.

Don't be stupid

If they supply computers then they should also provide support ..... but they don't.

Setting any (including an Ethernet connection) as metered connection is possible in all versions of WIN 10 including Windows 10 Home.

Then one has to disable automatic updates/set updates to manual, by disabling or setting to manual the Windows update service. Works on all versions of WIN 10 as far as I can see. I have not yet had to do this on a home version as I advise all to rather install WIN 10 Pro.

Risk: One needs to be careful when fiddling with windows services.

You cannot set a wired LAN connection as metered. Not everyone uses WiFi, or plug the USB device directly into their PCs. Also, setting a connection as metered is not always straightforwardly explained by MS.

Ok so lets say the customer had one of these situations... They got sent excessive data usage SMS's, ok maybe it went to the sim in the dongle or a phone on the moon and they didn't notice... Vodacom then soft locked the account at R1000, the customer then called and asked for the soft lock removed... Then wonders why they get an R8500 bill...

No sympathy.

Maybe if you hang around on mybb you have friends with ADSL and Fibre, but ADSL and Fibre is still a luxury, even more so uncapped ADSL.

So I can see a lot of people not having access to a friend with uncapped internet.

Pretoria Libraries gives you free Internet Access(500mb). But these days a android update is a gig.
It annoys me no end how ignorant a lot of people appear to be on here (site/forum) with regards to how most Saffers interact with the internet. Nice to come across somebody who gets it.

The guy has a R 1 000 limit. Seems to me like the kind of individual who can afford the data bundles needed for the update. The fact he knows what is responsible for the high bill also tell's me he's technologically inclined enough to have seen the problem coming.

Um no, you CAN set any connection as "metered connection". The process is slightly different to that followed for a wireless connection ..

Vodacom's usage notification don't always work and are easy to miss. Unless they checked network logs they wouldn't know they were even received by the customer. Vodacom is selling devices they know uses the first O.S. in history that requires being an expert to properly use it. To be fair the customer did ask to remove the soft lock but in what way? They could have called and asked why they can no longer use their line with call centre staff informing them it was locked and then subsequently unlocked it without really telling them the circumstances why it was locked.

To me both share responsibility for this. Vodacom for still having ridiculous out of bundle rates. Despite what the networks want us to believe they DO NOT budget for data upfront. So 1GB of data bought at the start of the month or used ad-hoc throughout the month costs them EXACTLY the same. There's no way they should get more than R400 for 4GB of data. Not to mention Vodacom has been stale and become out of touch with their bundle pricing.

+1

It's fscking annoying, the other major annoyance is that you can't schedule updates. Nothing as annoying as when you just booted up to play a game of CSGO & windows update starts killing your internet connection and then you have to go into services to disable background intelligent transfer & windows update services

If you use a USB device that creates an ethernet connection for mobile data - this doesn't work.

http://www.windowscentral.com/how-set-ethernet-connection-metered-windows-10

Not 100% sure if this works or whether it will actually prevent all updates, but followes these steps recently on a PC that uses a prepaid 3G USB modem as backup for an unreliable ADSL line. The USB modem actually creates an Ethernet connection and not a mobile data connection, the latter being one that can be configured as a metered connection without editing the registry.

Even if it works, non-tech-savvy peeps won't know that they need to do this. Big fail on MS's side. I wouldn't recommend just anyone to delve into the registry to do this either. I wish mobile data cost the same as ADSL data.

There are quite a few ways to prevent auto updates without having to make changes in the Registry. BUT you are right about having to know a bit about computers and the MS OS to be able to make the changes.

I didn't talk about it, but when you mention it, it is hacking, not 'setting'. When you hack registry you don't have any confirmation whether it work or not and any further update can ruin you bank account.

On this issue, I tried and results are as follow:
1. Disabling automatic updates (Windows update) service is temporary. It will be re-enabled after 10 minutes or so. It works the same on Pro and Home versions.
2. If you meant manual update settings in the Settings app, it is about some control over updating Windows when updates are already downloaded, in other words after tea in the bank.

So it's Vodacom's responsibility to give users access to cheap broadband that the masses can afford?

Technical ignorance is not an excuse here either. If you want to own a computer or a smart device, you should learn how to use it and the potential pitfalls of the device.

"Windows 10 is the best OS ever and why would one want to suspend its updates? It's so good it's worth R8500" - the Win10 is awesome crowd

Anyway, one doesn't have these OOB issues with Telkom...

Oh PLEASE...what a load of BS.

It annoys me no end that people own the latest gadgets to play with, but then claim ignorance or/and poverty when the schit hits the fan. If ADSL and Fibre is still "a luxury" then so is a smart device.

And all the potential social warriors can fuk off in advance.....

OK, make the providers install copper or fibre lines everywhere... we are waiting Mr Mighty.

That's one part of the luxury, or rather luck.
