West coast troughs can happen at any time of year, though they are most common in Autumn. The normal South Atlantic High is rather weak at present.

Wow interesting... I remember some rain late Sept, but i cant remember the weather being this all over the place late in October for quite some time

Cool. Its been a strange week. Cloudy, hot, some drizzle, back to being warm, then cloudy, and today lots of wind and dark clouds over head.

Cape Town was unaffected by the trough, but will get heavy rain tonight from a cold-front. Not uncommon to have a big storm at this time of year (December is usually dry). Report from October 2019:

There is a massive (TM) detention dam in the Diep River in Constantia that was built following a storm that flooded parts of Plumstead in the 1990s. It looks comically large and is almost always dry, but is designed for a scenario where you have 50mm of rain in 6 hours.

There is another diversion pond in the lower Liesbeek River, just upstream from the Observatory (and the River Club which used to flood regularly), which sees more frequent use.

I will be sure to look out for it next time I hike up that side of Table Mountain again.
I enjoy sitting up there on top and identifying different landmarks below, thanx :thumbsup:

It's not exactly visible from the mountain, since it blends into the terrain. A 10m high and 30m wide structure looks quite out of place in a river that is 1m deep and 5m wide. The issue is that the river valley flattens out downstream, and widens into a floodplain.

Not Cape Town, but friend of mine's family farm near Victoria West had 30mm rain overnight. This is the first proper rain in about 8 years and hopefully a turning point where the desert can turn back into farmable land.

Fun and games for the overseas guys starting a junior ITF tennis tournament in Cape Town tomorrow. This tournament is on the same level as a junior Grand Slam event.
