Some forecasts showed as much as 25-50mm possible in places, which is more than the annual average rainfall in that desert region.

.

Fascinated by the weather patterns. Our average rainfall for this area was always around 21 mm per year. This is sometimes not always true though as we can go some years with no rain whatsoever...
I was offloading my Spar truck on the forklift just now, with the most gentle warm rain falling.... beautiful and sometimes difficult to explain to city dwellers how it feels when the heavens open above a desert.

Where do you live? In the desert?

And what a desert it is...

This morning The English HO came rushing into the bedroom, "There's a bloody Gemsbok in the garden again and I cannot find it!" , she wailed....

She opened the back door and saw an entire trail of droppings on the cement past the braai area.... heading out into the darkness of the garden....

At night, they take to head butting the garden gate open, entering the property and munching the garden.

As the sun came out we discovered there were actually two Gemsboks in the garden, they got up and gently sauntered past the cat who refused to move out of their way.....So , Yes! I live in the desert! :D

So it looks like the low is going to move slower than predicted hugging the coast off shore so more rain and moving further south before encountering the approaching cold fronts

The trough is evolving, and after dumping rain on the Namibian coast, it is now set to produce heavy rain in the Northern Cape (not so much for CT).

Edit: The rain on Mon 21st will be from a passing cold-front (not the trough). See: http://www.yr.no/place/South_Africa/Western_Cape/Cape_Town/long.html

Edit: Any actual rainfall numbers from Namibia? The SAWS reports don't extend over the border.

Unfortunately not. We use to have a weather webcam down at the airport and DeBeers Marine have a weather station there, so I am still trying to find the info! It must be quite high though...

The low pressure area that is moving/has moved down the west coast has been declared as a cut off low. The low has turned inland and will be dumping lots of rain north of the mountains in the western cape. The low is also expected to affect the rains over CT as the probability of rain is now 60%. Then on Monday the first of two cold fronts move in.

I have been reading up on the AntArctic Oscillation (AAO) and the different ways it is measured. The AAO index was expected to go negative on the 15th, which it did and is still negative. Some weather fundis have suggested this index can be used as a leading indicator to weather changes, preceding a change by about 2 - 3 days. Well it would seem they are on to something.

It's an area of low pressure surrounding Antarctica that moves around.. positive indicating the low pressure area contracting towards Antarctica and negative it's pushing up towards the equator which in turn should mean better chances of cold fronts reaching us..

I believe I have the basic understanding of this but, I am no expert so stand corrected.. please correct me if I misunderstood anything..

There has been some heavy rain overnight and this morning, particularly near the mountains. Our gauge downstairs in Kenilworth recorded 10mm up to 8am, and another 16mm up to 11:30am. More showery now, but some quite heavy downpours.

The outlook for the rest of the week is mixed, but the remaining 10 days of May definitely look wetter, much more than the first part of the month.

Glad to hear that your day 0 is now indefinitely postponed.

Praying that the farmers also get good rains.

I'm in Table View, and it's quiet.

Had a bit of heavy rain this morning, but that was it.
