Rain users are angry - Here is why

Skameel should rather keep quiet and get the leeches off of their network. Rain should have just discontinued the fixed lte since it's no longer a priority.

And you think Fibre is not contended? You will be a bit naive to think that fibre means you always get 50Mbps. Probably less contended than 5G but at R1000 it pretty much beats any fibre deal out there.

Fibre is not contended over the last mile (especially Vumatel trenched which uses AON and not PON). There are contention on the ISP side but law of large numbers makes it much better. 5G contention is localized to every tower and upstream as well.

Zero forum presence and on Twitter I've been trying to get support for my 5G service for two weeks now and they simply do not care. Growing pains sure, and it's festive season so not getting too heated. They aren't getting a cent from me until it's sorted though.

22 downlaod...3.67 upload....30 ping
Beats Vodacom where I live....doing fine by me then.....!
I remember the good old days of GPRS in my area....
People seem to forget 2G. Really I'd like to see Vodacom provide the same service as Rain. They just simply can't.

Sounds more or less the same. Wireless you get your dedicated share of spectrum. What matters is the total bandwidth it can handle. People who didn't want to believe this with fibre are now seeing the effects with the complaints. It's not network issues like they keep telling the ISPs but simple congestion. They'd just have to get used to it and stop complaining.

Who told you that? First of all GPON is a contented service by design and Vumatel what do you think 100Gbit switches for each suburb? Never! 10 or 12 households with 1Gbps lines which are very cheap btw and the switch will start getting congested and hello packetloss.

Did you even see the 1:1 busniess fibre prices. FTTH is contended.

Obviously I don't know the details but maybe @websquadza @PBCool @TheRoDent can shed some light on how Vumatel last mile works. How many connections per switch average....

This does not come as a surprise... When I had the rain service, the service wasn't much faster than a 10Mbps fibre line and it had its moments. With that being said, it's still a good product... Where will you get unthrottled, unmetered daytime data for R250 a month. Will keep a close eye on their plans to expand their 5G network.

Well 5G still booming

That upload is still pathetic though.

What do you guys use the 300+ speed for? Multiple 4k streaming?

Not going to argue with you on that it's trash and one of the issues I have with it at my place. Closer to the tower upload speeds increase to 60Mbps.

That said at 11Mbps upload it's still faster than the entry level fibre download speeds which are priced between R500 and R650.

Interesting...

If the network can't even cope with end users on 4g, how is the bigger load from 5g users going to make it faster?

Got rain and with an average download speed of 2mb and max download speed of 4mb (Pings over 500ms) it got cancelled within 5days. Customer service saying I am in the coverage area. Tried it at 4 different areas (30km radius) and speeds were everywhere the same. Tried 2 different modems as well. MTN gave in that same areas 50mb download speed. Shame on you RAIN! This is all in Port Elizabeth.

it depends where you live, also in PE.

Some areas i've tested RAIN using Moto G5+/Poco F1/ Asus Zenfone 6

Motherwell NU29 - Pretty fast,
Motherwell NU10 - 4/5 bars no throughput whatsoever UL/DL dead AF.
Kwamagxaki Works if you can find a signal mostly dead
Uitenhage CBD - Works if you can find a signal mostly dead
Uitenhage Kwanobuhle - Pretty fast

New Brighton - Works if you can find a signal mostly dead
Algoa Park - Works if you can find a signal mostly dead
Korsten - Pretty Fast
Sydenham/Stadium - Pretty Fast 5/5 Bars
Newton Park 4th Ave - Blazing Fast even show 4G+
Airport - Blazing Fast
Forrest Hill - Blazing Fast
Summerstrand - Blazing Fast 4G+
Kabega Park - 4G+
Young Park - My house pretty bad but two streets away its blazing fast

it's crazy during the day i struggle sending compressed images but if i drive to newton park i can upload 1GB Video in the time it takes to do quick shopping

Little too late... I have cancelled and switched to the 100GB Afrihost Pure LTE on MTN for the same price I was paying for the Rain Fixed LTE.

I am now getting an actual connection. It is not what I have become used to with Rain but at least now I am able to connect and use the internet.

3 Months ago on Rain my average speed was 50+Mbps (average around 55 but sometimes up to 70) down with a latency of 17-19ms. Currently it is up to 2mbps with the same latency.

According to Rain this is due to "alarms" on the tower I used to connect to, which is about 1 km away from my location. I was told to point the antenna, which was returned to Cell C, to a site 4.6 KM away. It made no difference.

Porn... We can now watch our 3 favourite categories at the same time
Na, I don't know what other people here use it for, but I like downloading a large game in the same time it takes me to take a shower, or while watching an episode of something on netflix
