Rainbow Chicken on a knife edge

Health risk? Like what?

Pretty much all chicken has salmonella risk so you need to nuke it regardless of origin.

yeah look you add more parties to the process and by definition more things can go wrong

we are now getting chicken from everywhere as opposed to mostly just locally where we may potentially have better control over things

maybe its an irrational way of looking at things, but thats how I look at risk

I'm sort of drawing from another case where we couldn't export our ostriches because it posed an apparent health risk to the destinations they were going to, although not sure if it was ostriches or another animal or if the circumstances are comparable. I'll do research tomorrow if required (playing Quake and doing this)

A solution for these companies is to go organic.

There will always be a market for real quality. A lot of people also don't want to be supporting suffering animals.

It's silly to buy imported products. It's money leaving the country, making the money potential in the country less. Obviously a lot more should be done to protect our economy, but it isn't.

Also, it's quite noncompetitive, and a disgusting practice the way that they produce the chickens overseas. Only comment on this if you are clued up on the production process in the USA. I for one would never support that. Organic is the only way.

So the Rainbow braai packs in Game are now 1,7kg, down from 1.8kg and previously 2kg. 30% of that is brine. So you paying for 500g of water and 1.2kg chicken if my calculation is right.

The market for organic is tiny. Chicken is by far the cheapest meat protein in the country, and is a staple in many houses. If memory serves rainbow were doing a couple of million birds a week (I left the industry a good few years back now, so I am probably wrong on the specifics), you can't replace this with organic, the market simply doesn't exist.

Let them sink if they cannot remain competitive frankly, in the long run protectionism is bad for the consumer.

Not really.
Body tissue is about 70% water, which means that when you buy 1.7kg of chicken:
500g is water from the brine
840g is water that is in the chicken itself
360g is the part that contains all the protein and fat that you actually eat.

So when you buy rainbow chicken, you are buying 1.34 kg water and 360g of nutrients.

Which is why if you want as much chicken for your money as possible without any water; powdered is your best bet :D

Organic is extremely expensive and it's not sustainable.

I agree to what has been mentioned, just label chickens if imported or not and let consumers decide what to purchase

Should we really care ? plenty of places like rainbow are milking average joe consumer dry with the price fixing tactic , perhaps this can warn those companies involved in such that they should rather try get along with the consumer in RSA instead of chasing the quickest buck

This ^^

I suspect my local Spar is selling a lot of this imported Chicken. Its not labeled as such, however what i did notice is that the label states 'previously frozen' and the skin of the pieces appear a lot paler than the free range Elgin, Lazena or Woollies.
