I'm not going to pay more for local products to keep the employees employed.

Granted on this specific issue I have no idea where the chicken is coming from.

But if you take a holistic view then what's happening in the EU and US is not helping. This incident may just be a tipping point so to speak after the damage of years of no support from government.

could you provide source for this titbit of information.

Steroid injected chicken is banned, so it would be interesting to know how Food lovers market get away with it.

also as far as I am aware and know, Yum international (KFC) still have a contractual agreement for all their chicken (pieces, burgers and strips) to come from RCL foods (Rainbow)

So will be interesting if it is otherwise

Why not regulate it. Imported chicken should be clearly marked as such and same with take away places and restaurants.

If I see one chicken product marked imported next to one that is local and they are the same price, I will buy local. Dumping chicken into our country and then selling it to us for the same price as the more expensive local ones then what is the point? It is not going to make it easier for the poor to afford and is a plain rip off. If they are properly labled then all is fair in love and war.

To be fair, all the imported chicken in checkers *is* clearly marked. And it generally is cheaper than local chicken. Last week the Spanish marinated chicken was 49.99 per kilo vs Rainbow fresh chicken at 64.99 per kilo.

Whether the same holds true for restaurants I don't know...

That should be implemented for all chicken products at all stores. Then I would be OK with this.

Was looking at price per kg yesterday at Checkers in WC: Rainbow and Country Fair both go for above R50/kg for the thigh/drum "star pack". Think it was R52 and R54 irrc. Checkers have their house brand going for under R50/kg but the pieces look like it has a lot less meat on them. Pieces as noticeably smaller. I doubt they are imported dumped products though, because thise are more often the Gunpocket type thigh-and-drumstick attached pieces which are huge and I have seen them regularly at Spar for under R30/kg. Might have been frozen before bit they are sold unfrozen next to the other premium meat.

there is a health risk definitely, economic risks are neglible for me in the short term although I hate the fact nandos is expensive these days- I stopped buying it about a year ago.

Health risk? Like what?

Pretty much all chicken has salmonella risk so you need to nuke it regardless of origin.
