Ramaphosa explains 'Boer' comment

ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said on Tuesday it was unfortunate that his use of the term "boer" had caused offence.

"In my conversation with a Seshego resident, I warned of the danger of the country going backwards, and used a term that has commonly been used by black South Africans to refer to the erstwhile apartheid regime," he said in a statement.

"It is a term that continues to be understood in that way."

The Star reported on Monday that Ramaphosa had urged Limpopo residents to vote or the "boers" would take back power.

"If you don't vote, the boers will come back to control us," Ramaphosa apparently said in Seshego.

He was speaking to disgruntled resident Johanna Phala, 49, who had vowed not to vote in next year's elections because the African National Congress had disappointed her.

Agri SA on Tuesday said the politicising of "boere" had to end.

"The diverse political connotations attached to the term 'boer' is detrimental to the agricultural industry," Agri SA president Johannes Moller said in a statement.

"To equate 'boer' to Afrikaner people or a minority group or government, creates a generalised view that actual farmers [boere] represent a particular political profile."

Opposition parties criticised Ramaphosa for his comment.

Congress of the People president Mosiuoa Lekota said it showed shameful disregard for the Constitution.

The Democratic Alliance said the comment showed how much Ramaphosa was stuck in the dark ages. The Freedom Front Plus said the comment was racist.

On Tuesday, Ramaphosa said the comment was not meant to be derogatory.

"My comments were not meant to refer to a particular section of our population, and it is unfortunate if such an impression was created.

"If South Africa is indeed to move forward, all South Africans, regardless of language or background, need to work together as equal citizens," he said.

You know STS ... sometimes I think you will literally defend anything and anyone. What I ask myself though is it because you really feel that way or is it simply to be "anders"?

Not picking a fight ... merely pointing something out .... or perhaps I am having a passive aggressive moment again :D

Yip agreed, I dont get it at all. ;)

I actually had a bit of respect for Cyril, but that is now gone. For good.

He is a piece of sh*t & can go to hell.

I will never ever use McDonald's in South Africa again, because this racist will be getting richer from my "boer" money.

But I have not had the chance to taste the Mexican yet!!!!

Can anyone clear this up for me?

If I am white, I cant say black/darky/k****/n1gg4/etc then I am racist.

If I am black, I can say boer/soutie/whitey/<insert derogatory word here> then its ok and I will get away with it, (even if I am a public figure)?

You could say kefir, but that is something you put in milk or use as a natural raising agent...

Since I've discovered Burger King, I've never had the urge to go back to McCyrils.

Just be patient, I'm sure it will eventually open in your neck of the woods.

Why should one justify the other? The term boer was used to reference the apartheid regime, would everyone be as upset if he said boogieman take control again?

Well personally I hate it when colored or black ppl call me "boer" just because I'm Afrikaans white. Unlike popular belief, not all white ppl have family members with farms.

BTW, the term "boer" was used in the Apartheid era when referring to members of the SAP or SADF

I would probably feel the same too.

Well yeah, anyone who was serving in and continues to support Apartheid I would be seen as deserving of a more derogatory term.

Terblanche is his day probably represented the archetypal definition of the word 'boer' as used as a slur. Don't think he deserved to be murdered tho, he seemed to have had a turn for the better in his later years.

Our vice president is a racist which reflects the cadres in his party. He was asked about this statement and never apologised but deflected it by saying it's unfortunate. Well it is unfortunate that you have convinced me that the anc is racist and you are no better than the "old regime" which 64% of whites voted out.
