*READ FIRST* iBurst Network Status & Issues (DNS, Throughput and Latency)

The upstream network and transits have stablized.

Not from my side. Took me 4 attempts to try authenticate this morning to make a connection, web browsing is slow and online gaming is lagging like anything

iBurst very slow since this morning (Wapadrant, Pretoria)

This is one of the worst, but I did not get any faster speeds that 0.4Mb/s down.

Terrible - using iBurst for Remote desktop to the office.

Usually the download speed is better that 0.75Mb/s

Considering how often I'm F5ing MyBB, the result below is utterly infuriating. Note that while I get the message below for MyBB I can typically browse other sites. Further note that I had my router on default itsBust DNS to start with and watched the browser try and fail. Only THEN did I load up OpenDNS in the name of finding out what's wrong.

Error condition:
Nameserver trace for mybroadband.co.za:
Looking for who is responsible for root zone and followed l.root-servers.net.
Looking for who is responsible for za and followed nsza.is.co.za.
Looking for who is responsible for co.za and followed ns1.coza.net.za.

Nameservers for mybroadband.co.za:
ns0.is.co.za returned (NORECORDS)
ns0.neotel.co.za returned (NORECORDS)
coza1.dnsnode.net returned (NORECORDS)
ns.coza.net.za returned (NORECORDS)
ns0.plig.net returned (NORECORDS)
ns4.iafrica.com returned (NORECORDS)
ns1.coza.net.za returned (SERVFAIL)
ns2.coza.net.za returned (NORECORDS)

So, WTF *IS* wrong, dammit???

..so, seems it's MyBB shenanigans rather than anything iBurst did. So, hackles down at iBurst and pointed sigh at MyBB damagement! :erm:

There have been previous cases where the FW at firewall1.jnb2.host-h.net [196.7.216.173] was giving problems but I haven't noticed that for a while.

Ronald, what's happened today's night? Had no internet at all.

No aware of any issues? All towers ok and have even remote sessiond into my UT at home and all checks out ok. Can you provide more details? Can you auth? Do you have a nag screen? Skype working?
Details
Time: approx from 11pm (5/10/10) till morning.
Kind of problem: No internet access; router cannot log in.
Authentication: router cannot log in.
Modem status: Blue (power), Green (signal), Green (LAN).
Skype status: No internet access.
Resolution: automatically came back in morning.
Actions: resetting modem+router, did not help.
Screen: none.

Back into the future? 11pm is still a few hours ahead?

Did you have a log on your router with the PPPOE return?

I meant 05 oct.
Asked admin, he says that logging is switched off by default.

There is one thing to beware of and that is that there is a network parameter to prevent excessive authentications. A large number of auths in a 2 minute period triggers a back off. This is a security measure to make sure script kiddies and hackers don't abuse the network. (We had a case of in excess of 100k auths being attempted over an 8 hour period)
However, with some routers there is often a bug that manifests itself in this behaviour. The trick is to make sure your router has the latest firmware and doesn't blast the network with auths. The best method to troubleshoot is to view the logs in the router (without the logs it will be difficult to determine the cause). The PPOE error messages are very descriptive.

I was under the impression that iburst usernames were linked to hardware, meaning you couldn't log in with you account unless you have the allocated hardware too?

Strange... Can connect on computer, but not on router.

EDIT: Medal of Honor: Multiplayer Open Beta no longer sees me online and complains about no connection to internet. Game worked before on 04/10/10 and 05/10/10, after I wasn't able to connect to game servers at all. However, open beta hasn't finished yet.

EDIT2: Fixed router. Works.

Correct.

But that does not stop:
1. Someone who thinks they can bypass it and try
2. Someone trying a DOS with a flood of valid auths

So we have counter-measures to address the above and finally if the subscriber is a repeat offender then they are reported to the guys in black suits and dark glasses.

How did you fix the router?

How did you fix the router?

Done full reset. Then updated online. Switched on logging. Didn't worked. Reset and re-setup. Worked.
Logs mentioned disconnections and connections every 3 seconds.

I wouldnt say its crawling on my side, but its definitely sluggish compared to usual.
