I looking for this again.

My situation is basically like this:
  • Simple to use, it needn't have functionality for Internet connectivity and proxy settings and other such jazz.
  • Free because most parents don't pay their school fees.
  • It only need to work on a LAN
  • I want to gain control of multiple PCs at a time. 50 if possible.
  • Users (kids) should not be able to switch it off from their sides.

Recommendations based on experience will be greatly appreciated.
Other recommendations will just be appreciated. :D

You won't those features in a free product unfortunately. :(

You mean like a screen scraper? I use TeamViewer, although I'm not sure if you'll be able to control multiple PCs at the same time.

The number of PC's you could control at one time would be limited by bandwidth although in a classroom environment one would be connecting via the local network so the limitations would be based on the router capacity.

Teamviewer also has a "disable teamviewer shutdown" in its advance options menu..

It sounded so easy till the 50 PCs part.

If you just want to lock out the user for a bit so that the kids pay attention then that would probably be easier w/ a custom program.

You'll struggle to remote them anyway unless everything is 100% identical, which it won't be since they'll have different apps & windows open etc.

Unicenter, Radmin and a few other enterprise class solutions will do 50 PCs, but they're not free (and not cheap).

I run Dameware

Not sure about the 50 users at once, but it's got a lock feature that disables all input

We use a product called Netop School, it will meet all your requirements and more...but like the others, is not free.

I have Netop School but with a license for 25 PC's and 1 server of some 5 years ago. But it gives me exception errors everytime I click on something within the program.

They've definitely moved on from 5 years ago in terms of releasing new versions of the software. We only have a license for 20 machines. Perhaps an upgrade to the most recent version and additional licenses and you'll be in business.

download Windows 2003 admin tools (free)

Once installed
start/run/MMC
add the "remote desktop" snap-in and save the session as a desktop icon.

Now add as many entries as you want - either IP address or computer name.
names appear in left hand pane, content in right hand pane.

easy & free.
