Now that's really putting me off. I am beginning to realise how few people watch the free channels but my old man like to watch the news, Going Nowhere Slowly, My Wife and Kids, Two and a half Men, Pasella, Top Billing, Special Assigment, 3rd Degree, National Geographics and a couple of others.

Just spoke to neighbours about this and they say it irritated them initially but then they discovered you can adjust the screen settings to correct this problem. I will go and look at theirs tomorrow.

I sold DSTV dish and decoder as we were moving. When I first heard that digital TV was coming they said the boxes would be about R200. Over time they have crept up to R700 in price and we haven't even got digital yet. LOL
 
I think its a good idea to look at your neighbours setup. It probably depends on how critical you are on the picture quality... some people are just so happy to move to a flat panel display because the TV itself looks more modern :)

South African broadcasting isn't really ready for widescreen TVs yet - 90% of television broadcast in SA (DSTV or normal terrestrial) is not widescreen - very frustrating!

However, for DVDs, gaming consoles and PCs, LCDs and plasmas are great.
 
There settings on a Plasma/LCD to correct the picture, but that means that it will either crop a large part of the picture off at the top and bottom or that it will make black bars on the left and right, which actually makes the screen's viewable area significantly smaller.

Thank you, that is very knd of you. I went to Lucky's Lifestyle at South Coast Mall this morning and bought the LG 32" LCD HD for R5499. After a bit of haggling they agreed to deliver free of charge. They will also come and set it up for me without charge. I have bought from them in the past and find them excellent. Game's price was much more and they wanted R160 to deliver and they don't set it up. Hyperama House & Home had a very nice salesman called Cheyslen who was prepared to deliver it personally and set it up for me but they were only prepared to match the price of another store if I had a written quote from that store and I wasn't going to go through that palaver when I could get it from Lucky's. I daresay there will be people who will tell me, "But you should have bought ..." Already my daughter is telling me I was crazy to buy 32", I should have bought 42". But he who pays the piper calls the tune. Thanks for all the suggestions and advice from you guys.

And today the salesman at Lucky's said R800 LOL but then he added that there is a possibility that the Government is going to give them to us for nothing. We shall see about that.
