return iphone to owner

I bought a salvage/dead phone as a repair and restore project for cheap. I managed to get install a new battery and resolved a firmware software issue. I was told icloud status unknown and it was a cheapie so it was just to learn.

Now that i have it fixed, it is icloud locked.

Is there like a database or will istore be able to return the phone to the rightful owner ?
its an iphone 6s, so it might be worth nothing to the owner but i want to know if it can be done, why not ?

Be very careful with this, did you buy it from a trusted source?
The iCloud lock could be a red flag that the phone may have been stolen at some point or maybe previous owner just didn’t care to wipe it but the latter is less likely because the question would have come up to whoever got the phone after them.

I could be wrong, but something seems off.

Return it to the rightful owner, or try get them to send you an OTP?
It's an iPhone 6 and not worth anything - no more security updates.

Rule of thumb (almost always) is iCloud Locked = dodgy af.

Take it to an iStore and see if they can trace the owner. ie. They'll contact the owner on your behalf and ask if they can contact you.
