Review: HTC HD2

Wish I could swap, I already placed an official order and is booked on the system. Why don't you like the HD2? I think spec wise the HD2 is far better. And I want the radio, which the iPhone don't have.
Wouldn't say I don't like it but it just doesn't fit like an iPhone fits.

It comes very close but just doesn't perform with the same degree of accuracy and speed as the iPhone. Spec wise it's a beast, the HTC and the screen is BIG!! iPhone looks a bit stupid next to the HTC. Quality of the phone cannot be faulted either. Got a very upmarket feel about it and so it should at the price. Too scared to take the HTC out the house until I have some significant poach and/or shield to put on it. This screen is a huge target and I'm petrified of damaging it.

Anyway it's a damn fine piece of kit, make no mistake, just I don't miss WM OS and how contrived it makes every process, sending emails or smses, simply making a call becomes a laborious procession of key presses where on an iPhone it's 1 or 2 and send.

Played around a bit with the HTC last night running the shipped charge down and must say the more one fiddles the more impressed one becomes with it so in time could grow to either love it or hate it... and then there is XDA and all the tasty roms those lads release. Also talk of Windows 7 and Android OS for the HD2... so... Probably going to end up loving this piece...

Ordered mine 2 months ago, havent heard from half the places that promised to call me. The phone has been ready since last week Thursday, however I ordered two phones one for my mom and one for myself. Her porting from Vodacom to MTN is having issues so they wont release my phone till they sort their mess out...

IMO, the HD2 is more for tech geeks, the iphone is for normal users. Each has it's following, but as we all know there are more user-types than techy-types in this world. No doubt the HD2 is technologically better equipped in almost every way, but iphone is ahead in terms of aesthetics & ease of use.
As a gadget-freak, the iphone would never do it for me for more than a few days, but it may be different for you...

On multiple Reviews including one on gadget show, HTC HD 2 has out performed the Iphone in ease of use and general phone stuff :P like messaging brightness etc, and was voted better looking to top it off :). Later revealed 60% of Iphone users found it more appealing. (Will try find article)

In essence I believe the HTC HD 2 to be superior to the Iphone in many ways, however as was mentioned, it is marketed to a certain portion of the population most casual users would be more at ease with the simple elegance of the Iphone.

GOT IT TODAY!!!! Wow not sure what to say.. most awesome piece of tech ive ever seen in my life

I'm definitely one of the 40% then. A touch screen phone is only as good as its touch screen and while the HD2 has a superb screen it's no where near as responsive, accurate and sensitive as the iPhones...

I absolutely agree with you on that sandman - as an example I sometimes have to swipe twice to get the screenlock disengaged. But despite that I still prefer the HD2's screen because of the size & quality. I've had most of the HTC touchscreen products since the days of the first Ipaq PDA's, including the HD1 and I can honestly say that for the very first time, my internet experience on a handheld device is truly comfortable and worthwhile thanks to the HD2 display and the way Opera has been implemented on it along with pinch-to-zoom. It's perhaps my most compelling reason for preferring the HD2.
Of course all you guys (and gals?) who are buying/have acquired the HD2, I strongly recommend you go over to XDA-developers and implement as much of this long list of tweaks as you can manage to make your device the most super-duper gadget on the planet: :p
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638

....and that my friends is what makes the Iphone seem like just another smartphone (with due respect to all Iphone owners) ;)
When you've done with the tweaks, you will have Wireless N, pc-like 3G page-loading, multi-page shortcuts from the main HTC Manilla screen, a 7 mega-pixel camera, etc, etc, etc.....
Also do download a free app that uses your built-in compass to turn the HD2 into a metal detector! And don't forget to load the OMarket app to access loads of free apps directly via a nice interface on your HD2.
You might just wanna hold onto that HD2 a bit longer sandman :D

hahaha, I hear you. Been over to XDA already and got as far as loading the HSPL needed for flashing custom roms etc Then it got a bit more complicated and I lost interest but perhaps it is time to start a thread on "worthwhile tweaks and apps for your HD2"...

EDIT: Very tempted to purchase the SPB for $30 from marketplace...

Actually, I don't believe there's a need to flash the HD2 ROM to get the most out of the device at this stage yet - just my opinion tho. But that's why I linked to the Tips & Tweaks thread. It's fairly easy steps to follow, which will really make a substantial improvement to the device on its current ROM.

Now that link right there just up the anti some what!!! :D

....problem is, we're now turning the poor sufferers on this thread who still waiting for MTN & VC to deliver their phones even wilder with frustration! :p

Sigh talking from ANY experience? It has a capacitive touch screen? Its also been faulted for being to sensitive?

I'm finding the keyboard difficult to adjust to. Accuracy is an issue so I tried this as an alternative and it's focking amazing!!! :wtf:

Swype is a new way of typing... Well, its not typing at all... More join the dots eh letters... to make the word you want to type out. Sounds odd and quirky and it is but it focking works!!!!!

Yep, been using it for sometime now - it makes typing fun, but I can't get it to be the default keyboard. Sometimes it'll come up automatically when composing a new sms or email or typing in Opera, but at other times the windows default keyboard comes up and I have to reselect Swype again. I haven't monitored it closely enough to observe a pattern in this behaviour, but it would be nice if one could just pin it as the default for all apps. It' great for the most part except when entering usernames & passwords - it sometimes puts spaces between the characters or thinks you're typing a word.
Also the '&' character requires about 3 clicks to get to - bit of a schlep. I believe it was actually ported from the Samsung Omnia which it was originally made for.

Ye same here, after my phone is switched off then on again its no longer the default keypad to use :<

When is it in stock??? like I went to the vodashop store they said hopefully this week but they keep on moving the times !!

I went today to find out. There really is no stock. It seems like next week hopefully. It's very popular and the supplier (maybe Leaf) haven't ordered enough in the beginning. I'm also waiting. Ordered my pouch and condom for it from Pdair.com.
