Review: Nokia N8

Nokia is currently the only brand of phone that offers navigation with voice prompts
How does this differ from the voice prompts my (Vodacom) Blackberry sat nav gives me?

Nice review, sounds like a pretty crappy OS though...

Yeah, there are also multiple apps available for Android, and if you get Brut mod Google maps you can enable navigation (with voice prompts) for South Africa.

Just like the iPhone, the N8 is carved out of a solid block of steel
*Aluminium?

I don't get it. People complain about Symbian but within a day I was fully familiar with the OS (this is on a Nokia 5230).

Yes I am a geek and more IT orientated that most people but I haven't had any problems with Symbian (and I've fiddled around with Android and iOS).

I personally think Nokia shot themselves in the foot when they decided to start locking all they're smart phones. The reason I always chose Nokia was because of it's customization features. But that's just not the case anymore. I've got a Nokia 5230 and I can't do anything with it. The only apps that run on it is Mxit & Opera Mini. No free apps work, I'm afraid to purchase apps because they probably won't work so in my opinion this phone is absolutely useless, and it's not just the 5230 all S60v5 phones are like this.

I must admit, the camera is a compelling feature on this model. I've been there and come full circle where I take more pics with my phone than anything else simply cos I have it with me everywhere and I like to be spontaneous. To have 12Mp handy will be useful.

Symbian is dying though... the issue with Symbian in the past was the clunky dev environment, hence not that many apps appearing of late. Android is the real killer for developers so we are going to see a surge in Android - more apps makes happier phone owners, especially if there are so many free ones.

Nokias REAL issue, however, is the price of their handsets. WAY overpriced, period! I recall a time when HTC was expensive for what you got... seems the tables have turned.

I have an E71 and download apps from the Ovi Store and have yet have one not work...

Regarding the complaint about the widget size, I've posted a workaround in this thread. Unfortunately I haven't had time to update it with much else.

Basically there is a way to fit 20 widgets per home screen by making use of the Shortcut widget.

Because of this, the E90 would be the last Nokia I bought. For years I was a loyal Nokia supporter because of the customising to my needs. This all started to stop for me with the E90. I also note in the review that Nokia still struggle with having a seemless (and customisable) texting interface.

What the hell i wrong with them using Android... It gets better every day and they refuse to use it??? Anyway it is time for a new OS guys.

Swiping between home screens feels like one is sending commands to the N8 over a latent network connection. Unlike other smartphone operating systems that have multiple home screens (such as Android and Bada), Symbian^3 only switches screens after swipe gesture has been made. Usually one would expect the screen to move as you drag your finger.

You might notice that the homescreen starts scrolling only after you have completed your swipe across the screen but that’s how it was designed and not some lag. Because of the fact that some widgets are side-scrollable the handset waits to see if you want to browse them or skip to the next screen.

That does leave some doubt about the reviewers abilities.

Is it free for life and in Afrikaans?

guys like really this is the 1st time hearing this, but what you must remember is that there are s60 v.5 apps(touch screen) and s60 v.3(analog phones) so be sure of the platform before downloading. and again pls tell me whats the error msg. try these dailymobile.se

Same here :D Why on earth would Nokia go and use something as silly as Symbian, when Android begs to be used o_0
They have MeeGo and they are planning to release it on a couple of smartphone next year. It is about 12.7 to 548 times better than Andriod.
