Hi,

I'm the dummy here btw.

Got my Roku 3 last night with the express intent of using it to stream my media from my PC through PLEX and to use my Spotify account for music.

Being the dummy I am I setup my account as South Africa when linking it and then wondered why I couldn't find the Spotify app. Obviously it's not available in my region.

I've gone back to the Roku profile page, changed my region to USA and am now waiting for Entropay to validate my account. Once I've added this US virtual credit card, should this do the trick and open up all the apps I actually want instead of the crap thats available in SA?

Please help, I've been a tool and I know it.

It may a good idea to delete your account completely, and to then open a new USA one, using a different email address.

I often use a VPN to the USA when doing this, for example, Tunnelbear.

I would first sign up for an 8 day Unotelly free trial (you don't require any credit card). Load the correct DNS settings into your router and try to access www.netflix.com to see if you are able to access the US login screen (should see advert for $7-99 monthly fee etc.). Go to www.roku.com and try to set up a US Roku account using a fake US address (you will need a valid credit card to do this). You should get given a choice to load channels such as Hulu Plus during the process which will confirm that you have created the account correctly. Do a factory reset of your Roku from the Settings Menu on the front page. Once it has booted try to link it to the new Roku account using the code that appears on your TV.

PS You also need to unlink your Roku from the SA account (www.roku.com) as you can only attach it to one account at a time.

Thanks lads - so I can't just edit my address on my profile that I have already created? It's accepting my "address" in florida, postal code and fake cell no - I just need a US credit card.

I think you will probably need to create a new account using either UnoTelly or a VPN. If roku.com detects that you are outside the US via your IP address when you first create the account then you will not be able to load Netflix or Hulu Plus etc. You should be able to use an SA credit card to create the Roku account with any fake US address.

I'm thinking of getting the Roku streaming stick from amazon, did Plex work when set up your South African Roku Account?

I want the Roku only for Plex :)

Received mine today... and it worked! Used Unotelly on the router to do the DNS, and then on my laptop signed up for the US account.... so excited!!!

Yeah you need to use a VPN. Unotelly has a VPN option as well.

How does plex work on the roku?
Do you need to pay for plex to be streaming via the roku?
Is it a monthly dub or can you buy the app ince if fir each roku ir for your account?
I am planning to get about 3 roku's for the house.
The first one is on the way.

Indeed. 30 day trial then it's $4.99 to purchase.

The Media Server is free and you can get RARflix app (https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/79897-rarflix-modified-roku-channel/) which is free and actually has more functionality than the official one.

Thanks DrJZ for the rarflix suggestion. Why did I buy plex

It's worth it. And so worth it I paid for a lifetime subscription to Plex pass (R600 or something like that from what I recall. Purchased it when Plex pass first went live).
This software suite is so powerful and worth every cent. Payment will only ensure it gets better.

Plex on the Roku is just the tip of the iceberg (and I got 5 Roku's).

Mike as a genuine question what other benefits are there to buying the plex pass...? How does it benefit you in your setup at home or general usability for that matter over and above what is already offered..? (We have two Roku's atm and have been using the "free" plex app on the Roku without too many issues)

Quick access to new features is kind of cool. The main thing I use - and a lot - is sync'ing content from my server with my tablets/cells, and if need be, using my cell as a Plex server while traveling with the family, and the family streaming from it to their devices.

List is here : https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201751006-Plex-Pass-Feature-Overview

With the 2 most important (to me) being here https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/sections/200066938 and here https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200889968.
Plex Sync is seriously boss.

EDIT: General use using the free stuff is hundreds and the family survived for a long time like that without issue. It does the job well. Plex Pass just gives you some extra stuff which I find handy - but not essential.
