Rough seas ahead for MultiChoice

Local-is-lekker is the main problem, which is then their attitude.
Everyone in Africa likes American productions, even DStv Mods said as much years ago.

But the value of the Rand means little chance of a recovery option anyway IMHO.

That "free" is an illusion, sooner or later the market will find a way to stop much of the leak. They already could prosecute for some of it, just not a safe bet so they're not.... yet.
They've been trying to plug the leak for decades. Someone always find a way to unplug it.
Can't prosecute what they can't see.

Main thing is, it's not acceptable to the studios. Plenty of peeps still say that's a good enough reason not to go that route, why some sort of services here does still work.

Why would anybody keep their DSTV subscription active when you can pretty much watch any series or movie online for free, if you know where and how to? Same thing with sport, so many sites out there where you can stream for free.

Only reason I can think of is if you're addicted to Afrikaans soapies, then KykNet is a must. Otherwise just cancel your subscription like I did years ago.
Because as mentioned many times, only a handful of SA have access to a reliable and affordable internet connection. Just because you have, does not mean others do.

Netflix is cheaper than DStv and has better quality viewing.
Only thing that needs to happen is sport streaming. Once that happens DStv will have very little reason to exist.
Just not doing anything about locals accessing their internationally available content with a VPN, their actual SA service can't compare 'cos DStv cornered the market. But again, who knows what that will end up as in the years to come.

It's sad cause there is a lot of content I still do watch on DSTV, they are also ahead on Good Doctor, Young Sheldon and the like, streaming services are great for binging, but often while wanting to watch something you spend more time browsing.

Yeah, but much of their series offerings have become really poor compared to the past. Some of it due to "industry privatisation" like what Netflix produces themselves, and like how Disney "hijacked" the popular Greys Anatomy series, but most seems to be a woke cooperation... they can shove that krap they're now pushing.

Yeah the ones like that where the studio revokes it due to streaming rights sure, but they do have stuff still not only reserved for streaming.
Sadly streaming services are becoming like cable/satelitte TV, where you need multiple subscriptions just to watch and you need to keep track so you can cancel or sign up.

Yep, we were very spoiled in the past in that sense.
Another reason why some go for the "free" options out there. Maybe waiting a few weeks would make that more fair?

Lastly, the movies.... they've really failed to keep up with that, about 2 years that they've had a MASSIVE lack of some of the serious titles out there.

Well sadly the movies that have been "big" have been part of the Disney corporation really. But from what I can see they've had some of the others?

  1. Don't try and scr3w your customers at every corner;
  2. When your customers complain about the same things (constant repeats, too much crappy local content, non-sensical bundling of bouquets etc.), you should maybe listen;
  3. When you turn your back on the demographic that made you what you are, don't complain when it backfires;
  4. When you think you are too big to fail, you will be proven wrong!

Not really volume-wise, some on their Box Office but that costs extra and most no longer filter down to the MM1 & 2 channels anymore. That's why you can get those channels so cheaply as an extra now for the lower packages, less than R100 pm.

There are literally dozens of decent movies they skip now, not hard to find the lists.. but I'm not gonna give you any links :whistling:

As much as I hate to concede, the fact is that DSTV's sports coverage is unparalleled in terms of breadth, coverage, immediacy and reliability, convenience and requires zero fxcking around with technologies that are arcane to the vast majority.

Sit on couch, press "Power On", switch to channel of choice - beer/dop/cooldrink/coffee/popcorn/chips/biltong/snacks - done.

Sit on couch, press Power On, open app of choice, navigate to game of choice, click Watch Live...?
