Factions are starting to form in the ANC camp. 48 hours / 142 race laws / Soweto friends is getting ready to mount his own leadership push aligning to the DA as he can see the writing on the wall. Unfortunately the New Dawner is still stuck in 1999 so will probably fade into oblivion

Not against everyone, just whatever is in the public domain. He can't in any case, because as soon as he starts, the rest would MONC him before he gets to them.

But this is all speculation, we're assuming he's a good guy. He's not, he's the same as the rest of them. All we can do is continue to cheer for him to do nothing as more scandals are exposed...

Exactly, Cyril is just as corrupt and incompetent as the rest of the looting scum, hes got his own phala phala hes trying to bury.
 
Higher Education and Training Minister Nobuhle Nkabane snubbed Parliament on Friday by failing to attend a meeting in which she was supposed to account for the administrative mess relating to her controversial appointment of Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) chairpersons.
Instead, she opted to deliver a keynote address at the Annual National Student Leadership Induction Programme in Buffalo City.
Representing the ministry were Nkabane’s deputies, Buti Manamela and Mimmy Gondwe.
Higher education portfolio committee chairperson Tebogo Letsie said Nkabane sent a letter of apology.
He wrote back to Nkabane and said: “The apology for the meeting of 18 July is not accepted owing to the seriousness of the matter. The committee has also requested the date for the meeting in order not to clash with Cabinet meetings.”

He asked Nkabane to reconsider her decisions, but she refused and asked if the meeting could take place next week instead.
In May, Nkabane withdrew the appointments after an outcry that the appointees were ANC-aligned.

  • The allegations emerged in a leaked security report claiming Powell spread disinformation about South Africa during a visit to the US.
  • The DA’s lawyers wrote to Ramaphosa, demanding answers about a leaked confidential report implicating Powell.

The DA has pleaded with President Cyril Ramaphosa to take urgent steps to protect its MP Emma Powell, making a pre-emptive request in case a national security threat implicates her in any way.
The party’s legal team is up in arms after Powell was embroiled in allegations that she spread disinformation about South Africa during a trip to the United States. The claims were detailed in an article published by The Sowetan, which reported that a confidential document containing the allegations had been submitted to the National Security Council, chaired by Ramaphosa.
According to the article, the report claims Powell “undermined SA’s international relations and domestic policy” by spreading disinformation. It also cites unnamed insiders who allege that Powell used her US visit to push an anti-government agenda, despite the DA being a key member of the government of national unity.

Powell, along with a DA delegation, visited the US in February this year. At the time, the party said:
The DA remains a steadfast and credible advocate for South Africa’s national interests on the international stage.

The delegation included Andrew Whitfield, in his capacity as DA Eastern Cape leader and federal executive member, and Powell as the DA’s national spokesperson on International Relations and Cooperation.

On Wednesday evening, DA lawyers wrote to Ramaphosa, demanding answers about how the media obtained the report.

“We confirm that, notwithstanding the fact that our client was not afforded sight of any of the accusations or purported findings contained in the confidential report, she denies any wrongdoing of any nature during her time abroad in February 2025,” the letter, which News24 has seen, stated.
The letter continued:
It is an offence to leak classified information. It appears that members of the intelligence service or non-members have disclosed classified information, including to a newspaper.

“Our client requests that you and the National Security Council take urgent action and take necessary steps to address this disclosure. This includes urgent measures to protect our client should she be implicated in any way by a national security threat.”

Tensions between the ANC and DA escalated this week after Powell released a statement on Tuesday claiming that Ramaphosa’s special envoy to the US, Mcebisi Jonas, had been denied entry into the country and that US officials had refused to accept his credentials.
In response, presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya issued a strongly worded statement accusing the DA of “positioning itself as part of a right-wing nexus”.
Magwenya declined to comment on the DA’s legal letter to Ramaphosa.
Powell believed she was being targeted for political reasons.
She said:
There is an insidious political agenda at play, in which taxpayer-funded state security services are potentially being weaponised against sitting Members of Parliament in order to achieve political objectives.

“The DA has been clear about who our delegation met with in the United States and the nature of our trip. Both the DA’s media statement following the trip and subsequent public interviews provide detailed information in this regard.
“Both the potential surveillance of a sitting Member of Parliament by state security services as well as the targeted leaking of a classified report in a clear attempt to tarnish and intimidate such a Member in performing her duties are serious criminal offences under South African law.”

Powell confirmed that the DA’s lawyers have written to both Ramaphosa and Minister of State Security Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, requesting an urgent investigation into the origin and leak of the alleged report.
“There is no place in a constitutional democracy for Members of Parliament to be actively surveilled by the state in performing their functions and representing their political parties on the international stage.
“As the ANC continues to engage with its friends in the axis of malign actors, the likes of Russia and Iran, the DA will continue to openly and constructively engage with the international community of democracies,” she added.
Meanwhile, Sowetan editor Sibongakonke Shoba said: “We stand by our story. We are taking legal advice on Ms Powell’s statement. We have been advised not to comment further.”

That shows the abject poverty of South Africa. Married SASSA pensioners, each with an independent pension income of R1000 per month, would be classified as middle class by two of those estimates.

The World Inequality Database classifies a household consisting of married SASSA pensioners with no extra income as middle class.

And here I was thinking that middle class people can afford a three bedroomed house with a garden and a decent second hand car.

How do these people get away with just not pitching to meetings about updates on things they are specifically responsible for?
Wherever I have worked that would for sure be asking for your useless arse to be fired.

Tl;dr - this inquiry might not be a bad thing. It again puts the ANC on trial, like the Zondo commission before it. Even if no actions are taken, it sways public opinion which reflects at the polls, which is what actually matters. What's different this time is the public can see how ministers from other parties are performing, while the ANC isn't just underperforming but actively corrupt. If Cyril took decisive action on the Zondo report or even these recent events, it may have actually worked in the ANC's favour...

The current Chief of the SA Army was denied amnesty by the TRC and has a murder charge against him that he has never answered for:

Because they are ANC? Only DA ministers can be fired, its written in the constitution or something.
