The Swiss were on the hook for 31%. They have been negotiating and still failed. Your irrational optimism is obviously misplaced i am asking how they are different from SA. Same initial positions and both failed to sway Trump. The Swiss objectively did worse because they got slapped with an even higher tariff post negotiating. Logically that makes them more incompetent negotiators than SA.
And they don't have the strained relationship that we do. Everyone is making a bigger deal about our tariffs than they should. Countries that should have received lower tariffs ended up worse than us. Canada is another one...

Nah, Canada has done some stuff that would obviously piss off Trump, like claiming to recognise Palestine as a state.

Just wait and see, and you'll be amazed by my foresight. It's not irrational optimism - it's understanding the incentives at play.

You still don't say how they failed in 90 days that they can recover in 7.

A religious like belief is not foresight, by the way.

I didn't say they would recover it in 7, I said the Swiss will eventually get a significantly lower rate than their baseline of 39%. Just you wait and see.

We've done worse, and actually treat their enemies like our friends. They're trying to pass a bill specifically for us. We got off lightly...
Trump has a more personal relationship with Canada and they're being belligerent so he'll hammer them worse for that. He needs them to kneel before zod.

The Swiss were probably hard hit because Trump wants pharmaceutical companies to be in the US. The trade balance is very much in favor of the Swiss and Trump wants that to change. The Swiss dont have much to offer to alleviate that position. 13% of their trade is with the US they need to find a way.

The Swiss pharmaceutical companies had promised to make billions in investments in the US and it didn't help. We offered to buy 12bn USD in LNG and it didn't help. There's no negotiating with Trump. He just decides.

For now.... I wouldnt discount the chance that our rate increases further in the future.

I think you are possibly in for a wake up call that this isnt a Trump exclusive policy but rather an American one. Biden did not remove Trump tariffs and im far from certain the next president (even if they are a democrat) will remove these ones.

Done with appointing the Minister. The President of the Republic has now changed his hat and now wearing his hat as the President of the greatest Liberation Movement.

The great gathering of looters!

They are likely to hurt America I'm sure they'll be mostly removed or reduced. I think in general America imposed less tariffs so they are due some tarrifs but not at the scale Trump is going. And yes, this is MAGA and Trump not America. His cabinet are a crowd of sheep who work to please him.

The President of the Republic has now changed his hat and now wearing his hat as the President of the greatest Liberation Movement.

There was no liberation in South Africa. He cannot be president of the greatest liberation movement because liberation never happened.

He should therefore be described as the president of the greatest failed liberation movement.

Not all SA goods to the US is tariffed. Mining is exempt which is almost half of exports to the US.
True they're excluding minerals needed for ai and military applications.

But citrus, wines and aluminum are in for pain. Aluminium must already contend with 25% tarrifs but still compete. Not sure they can at 50%.

@R13... - you still think SA couldn't have made a better effort? Only 1 OF 3 African countries to attract the top rate of 30%...

I, of course, think they could and should have done better. The ANC's habit of being business hostile is probably a factor. They should have pulled in business (but they may have, we don't know - the LNG thing seems to have been business suggestion). The noise did seem to suggest that most business bodies didn't know what was going.

The Swiss should have done better too. Who's to say they don't suffer the same affliction as the ANC. Again, we don't know enough detail so both are judged aggregatively from outside and the score is they both failed. The Swiss managed to make things even worse than if they made had just done nothing, LOL.
