The ANC definitely have a vested interest in taxis but people also need to take responsibility. Don't get into taxis that are clearly not road worthy or overloaded. Don't put up with a driver that is breaking every road rule under the sun.

You are the customer, you dictate the level of service you expect and if you don't get it, take your business elsewhere. Ive caught taxis in my younger days and once you're familiar with your route you know who the good and bad ones are.

Very good points. Residents must take these protests to the homes of taxi owners.

And sometimes they can't choose what kind of taxi they use when going to work or school. The fact that someone is using public transport in the form of taxis should indicate they don't have much leg room when it comes to choice regarding transport.

They have closed off roads in my area before, SAPS wont go near them. They have free reign to do as they want.
And its been left this way for so long that it will never be changed.

Yes we still dont have this Durban Go! because of the taxi industry, all that infrastructure just rotting away unused because the government are too spineless.

The only way you deal with it is to stomp on the behaviour hard, and be prepared to deal with 2 or 3 weeks of transport chaos while the taxi owners/drivers adjust to their new "reality".

But that will never happen, because there are cops and politicians all in bed with the industry, or part of the industry directly.

The person who unleashed this latest can of worms is also a General in the army.

There are talks of a coup loading in South Africa as more and more Generals speak against the government.

Bra, in our complex, there is a house that belongs to taxi owner. He died couple of months ago but when he was alive, he was well protected when going in and out of estate. Pretty much the only "gangsta" I have gone so close to although hardly any of us met him despite him staying here for many years so I doubt protestors would know where taxi owners stay.
 
The ground is certainly fertile for an attempt at a coup...

Unemployment, unstable coalition government, illegal foreigners, etc.

It is fairly well-known in most towns, that members of the local police are owners of taxis, hence "protection".

Fair enough.

But forcing Malls to beef up security and remove taxi ranks is only a temporary fix. The issue are these taxi bosses.

When communities get angry and really angry, no amount of protection will stop the people.
