Those bricks looks nice but geeez two years to do it and at what cost and thats only for phase 1.

And five years from now the side walk will likely still look like this, unfinished unless tannie Zille and the DA runs the show.

Definitely, the problem with it is that the water gets under the bricks and ends up washing away the sand. Making the whole thing an uneven mess after a while and that's when the bricks start to break.

You can also be damned sure that the subsurface for that paving has not been constructed to handle hundreds of vehicles an hour as well as the regular 10 - 20 ton trucks that will use the road.

Once its open to the traffic, I think conservatively 2 months before its showing signs of being fscked.

Once the first paver loosens, it starts moving/rocking as vehicles goes over it. It loosens those next to it. Soon it's a mess. I really can't believe any engineer thought this was a good idea. But maybe it was a colleague of the too-tall trains engineer.

Looks fine to me, more or less the same standard as a tarred road, the concrete base is way more than adequate. The second contractor knows their job.

 
So how thick is that sub base? What material is it composed of? What level of compaction has it undergone to engineer it to an appropriate level.
No idea, I wasn't building the road, but I can see that the sub base is crushed stone and gravel as it's intended to be and it looks at least a metre thick, which is more than adequate.
