SA should get first dibs on Vodacom - CWU

this is because in typical African fashion someone local didn't get his backhander and chance to stuff up another decent business!
 
I cannot think of anything worse than govt buying those shares. We need them to own less and not more. If there is more competition there will be more jobs in the sector anyway...

1. Why Telkom charges 56c for a local landline call. When u can make a call from India - 2 - USA for 15c.

2. Why Telkom charges R349 for ADSL internet 1 gigabyte of data. When in Morroco u can get the same for R99.

3. When Telkom awarded a Contract to Huawei to build a Wireless 3G network. How is it possible they got 250 Base Stations for R1.7 Billion. When they should have got a 1000 Base Stations for that money. Please investigate how much of the R1.7 Billion was back pocketed by people who awarded the Tender.
Why were all Telecom Equipment Vendors not invited to Tender 4 this project. Huawei must be doing some hanky panky behind closed doors.

4. Why is Telkom not speeding up Wireless 3G rollout in rural areas.

5. The very high Bonuses paid to Top Level Excutives can avoid retrenchments.

They should not have sold to Vodafone. But between a foreign company and our government hmmmmm... Perhaps Vodacom could have bought Telkom out... would that have been an option?

True! Why should Vodacom be owned by the government??? Look at what Vodafone had done since they had a share in Vodacom! We have services all around the world now also in South Africa!

If a big company such as Vodafone can put money into South Africa, other world company's would follow thus bringing in trade into africa! Long story short : OVERSEA'S PEOPLE BUYING SHARES IN SOUTH AFRICA IS GOOD! Remember the last time VodaFone got some shares the rand even started trading well!Maybe CWU maybe know something otherwise but in a time when many people are pulling out from countries other than their own I THINK VODAFONE AND VODACOM DEAL IS GOOD THING!

I think we lost a good company to Vodafone...
Vodafone is buying out every SP all around the world, but making Vodafone a stronger company. They wanted Vodacom for years now, Vodacom is one of their best, high subscriber base and a very low churn for the past 10 years, its only benefiting Vodafone. Vodacom will also benefit from the buyout but only for things like new products and services. Vodacom and SAs money will still be going overseas... thats not so good.
Im sure Vodacom will do better without the help from Vodafone.

They're probably outraged because Vodafone is doing such a terrible job worldwide of providing communications. Oh noes, my bad, that's Telkom's are of expertise :/

1 We have an ANC government, Ivy and Telkom.
2 Morocco have a government and competition, we have the ANC and Telkom.
3 We have the ANC, BEE and I think you answered you own question.
4 The Powers that Be do not live there.
5 All animals are equal but some are more equal than others.

Could not resist the above...but why would one wnat to see Vodacom being messed up...at least it works and it is more than what government can say about the way the country is run...:confused::confused:

Our own companies abroad like Telkom MTN etc sell their internet packages for cheaper outside South Africa than they do home. I doubt it has anything to do with where on the continent you are, but how your country gets managed.

Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco all have more broadband subscribers than RSA and we are richer than these countries combined.

1. It seems to be less than 50c / minute even for prepaid? (~40c for postpaid)
2. Including (voice) line rental that is about R324 / month (Do 1GB) Morocco have at least 320Gb of international bandwidth available (another cable exists, cannot find bandwidth specs; they also have access to SEA-ME-WE-3, which was completed about the same time as SAT-3), South-Africa shares a maximum of 250Gb with several other countries. (Both countries have access to SAT-2, but its capacity is negligible)
 
SA should get [-]first dibs on Vodacom - CWU[/-] off its ass!
- Get rid of communists like the communist workers union.
- Get taxes down to an acceptable rate
- Get competent people in key positions
- Get with the program
- Get 1st world

If I remember correctly, Telkom would still have to sell Vodacom before Vodacom can purchase them, because I think a subsidiary cannot hold more than 10% (Or maybe 20%) in its holding company according to Companies Act. So someone will still have to buy the vodacom shares and then they could buy Telkom. But correct me if I'm wrong ... this is an assumption and I'm lazy to read.
