SA vs Denmark

The shocking thing is, that according to a BBC report we have the 7th richest league in the world. Why then is our football pyramid so lop-sided? Surely the fault must sit with SAFA management and not their coffers.

...and some smart negotiator must get Parreira to drop his fee so we can afford to keep him on after the WC and let him start the u20 and u23 football leagues. The man is clearly worth every cent they're paying him.

I don't think it's his fee....he wants to get back to his family:
“There has been talk of me being a sort of director of coaching or something like that, but I have said no as I want to get back to my children and grandchildren in Brazil.

"I really miss my family. I have been away for five months and leave Bafana and South Africa after the World Cup, but I am determined to leave them in a strong position of at least having qualified for the second round of the World Cup.

"I have been coaching at many World Cups (2010 will be his sixth) in 42 years in soccer. I think I have earned a rest,” stated Parreira.

SAFA " everything keeps going wrong", "we can like to bungle everything"

Yip the WC will be great, but I want to see the improvement in overall football in SA. Look at what the USA did with MLS since WC94. I want to see the PSL and NFD made fully professional (a start is being made), but we need improvements in the total football pyramid. Also, we need to focus on proper youth structures, where is the u19 league that we were talking about years ago. Also, the 'rich' schools need to start offering soccer, sad as it is admit, these schools can better afford to offer the best faciliaties and coaching.

In 94 soccer was tiny in the USA, today MSL has 16 teams, and averages over 15 000 per game. SA already has a decent PSL, we can really build a great football culture post WC.

I went to a rugby high school, even though ALL the feeder primary schools played football as soon as we got to Std 6 we had to make the switch to rugby. Hockey was the only alternative to rugby. We fought for years and years to get football included as at least an option but due to our history in SA, similar to the UK's, certain schools see rugby tradition as more prestigious. I matriculated in the year 2000...and rugby is still the main sport there even though at break time all the boys play football...

That sucks :(

They just better not listen to him if he suggests a replacement for himself! He was the one who recommended Joel Santana to SAFA!

After the WC Danny Jordaan will become the 4th vice-president of SAFA. The new head honchos at SAFA seem dead-set on renovating the place so hopefully (touch wood) things have turned a new leaf. They need to rebuild the School of Excellence (that's where Steven Pienaar was unearthed) and build one in each province. They also need to find out from Wits what it is they've done so well for years in their youth teams and how coupling football with education works for them and implement it at every university.

Same here, I played football all through primary school. Then we got to highschool and had to choose a sporting code (Rugby vs Hockey) I chose hockey.

Now, the thing is, all through primary school we played football all the time, every breaktime/after school etc. High school didn't stop us, we played football every single break from std 6 to matric without fail. We hated the fact that there was no option to play football.

Hopefully with the new air of partnership between the rugby and football guys the old generation parents at these schools (its essentially in their hands as the school governing body decides how and what a school does) vote football into the extra-mural activities. Soccer is played in a different season anyway, so it will actually be competing with athletics and cricket...

Had Bendtner been there it might've been a different story.

These warmup games are traditionally not representative of how sides do in the World Cup.

I'll reserve judgement until the final whistle of the Mexico-SA game.

I was there. To me what was a bit odd is that we have a Brazilian coach but our team plays like the Italians. I might be wrong but I think we play the same as the Italians. We defend and counter attack. Denmark was attacking more than Bafana and they had more possession, but they never really threatened that much...

Even in the confed cup we were a VERY good defending team "booooooooooth!", but our attacks lacked successful strikers. I mean flip we almost beat Spain in the semi's.

I think the key for us has been to maintain the team shape at all times. I have watched all the friendlies so far and we now rarely get exposed at the back. The only time I can remember was when SA played Columbia. Everyone went up for a corner and the Columbians hit us with a long clearance. Our keeper was left one on one and had to foul the striker thereby conceding a penalty.
Throwing everything in attack is obviously not going to work for our slow and tactically naive defenders.
I just hope we never fall behind and be required to chase the game...cause I don't see that happening. We might end up with a real hiding...:D
