Unfortunately the article is a bit vague, but it's a start -

http://www.macworld.com/article/150051/2010/03/apple_profit.html

Sorry I still don't see it, it seems to be the general consensus online that an iphone 4s costs about $249 dollars to assemble and package {for the 64GB model}

The baseline iPhone 4S model with 16 gigabytes (GB) of NAND flash memory carries a bill of materials (BOM) of $188. When the additional $8 manufacturing cost is added in, the total increases to $196. The other iPhone 4S models are identical to the baseline version, with the exception of the addition of more NAND flash. This gives the mid range, 32GB model a BOM of $207, and the high-end 64GB version a BOM of $245

Yet the unlocked prices of the iphone 4s in the states

Freedom from contracts won't come cheap, though. A 16GB unlocked iPhone 4S will be $649, a 32GB version will be $749, and a 64GB device will set you back $849

Also note that these prices don't include sales tax at 7%-10% in the states.

Now I appreciate that a company must make a profit and that this is the purpose of any company and that the value of the product is only determined by the massive demand for it yet the fact that apple fans are proud that they are paying more baffels me, the galaxy s2 must have roughly the same manufacturing cost {if not higher considering dual core processor, more RAM, NFC chips in certain models, bigger battery, not sure of screen price may be cheaper or more expensive} yet the phone sells for almost half the cost of the iphone. I am amazed that people are saying it's a good thing apple is taking so much profit with such a small market share {I realize that this isn't a PC/MAC comparision but I think the same logic applies}, it can in no way for the consumer be a good thing that apple makes far more profit than other companies with greater market share all it means is certain consumers are prepared to overspend {by a massive margin} on a product purely for the branding/eco-system apple provides, now I acknowledge that the apple eco-system may be necessary for certain people and that it is good, easy and friendly but the fact that they have so many consumers not only buying into but DEFENDING their model tells me their must be something very very wrong somewhere. I am not trying to bash apple fans or start a fan war but I am amazed when apple fans try and defend the insane premiums they pay for devices which have essentially the same features as others. Also I am not bashing anyone who chooses to buy an iphone or saying that it's a terrible platform {I used to use a iphone} just that apple are robbing you blind and will continue to do so as long as people defend their profit margins and try and justify their pricing model as a good thing {which it is for them (apple) but certainly not for the consumer unless you have shares in the company}.

Realized after I posted that I can't compare the US and RSA prices for the phones so the 2:1 comment may not hold true there never the less my point stands.

So, anyway, no idea if this has been mentioned but i got an email from I-Alley who advertise the cheapest Iphone4S "on special" for R10k:

16GB - R9999
32GB - R10799
64GB - R11699

Now, tell me how that makes sense in ANY way, matching the Galaxy S2 against the iphone spec to spec, and then referring to the price again. Value always ways heavy on the scales when spending that kind of money. Either you care about how you spend what you earn or you don't. If you really care what people around you (the smart ones anyway) think...Meh, I'll stop there.

Won't the price come down when the phone is released here officially?

They also sell the Blackberry 9800 for R6,700 which you can buy for R4,500. That should give you a general idea of iAlley's prices. ;) I would imagine they are importers comparable to WantitAll and other monetary ass rapers. :)

You talking about two totally different platforms. Therefore you can't compare.

:-( why can't you compare? Both are smartphones with the exact same capabilities. Both do the exact same thing: Communicate, entertain and other utilities such as waking you up etc. I like iOS just as much as anyone else, and i appreciate the differences between platforms, but it still comes down to what you are paying for it. As SiriS says, maybe the price estimate is off, time will tell.

You weren't comparing capabilities...

I have a theory! This whole OS war reminds me of The Matrix.

"You take the blue pill (IOS5) – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill (Android) – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."

Nice one.

It still amazes me that when some people get an Apple device, they think they're getting a magical unicorn or a Bugatti Veyron, the difference is, Bugatti don't use 1400 datsun parts and add 800% markup.

Mac parts are literally average desktop parts in a nice pretty box, may as well add a faggy ribbon.

But because they're paying so much, it just HAS to be the best.

I have an i7 laptop that plays bluray, has 4GB ram upgradable to 16GB, 2 hard drive bays, I paid 7000 for it but was lucky to have someone visit california and bring it back to me (more than a year ago).

How much would a Mac cost that has exactly the same parts, 30 000?

This diatribe deserves its own thread in the Apple section.

haha, yeh.

Although this stopped being about the "Samsung Galaxy S2 or Iphone 4" a while back.

The OS argument will probably have no end in sight.
