Is there a simplish way to share my desktop PC's ADSL connection with the device via USB (I don't have a wireless router) to avoid data charges when pulling stuff off the market? If not, what kind of alternatives are there?

Reverse Tethering is not very common. Although the Desire HD has built in support for it ):

Could this help: http://akalankapagoda.blogspot.com/2011/08/sharing-your-pc-internet-connection.html

You can of course just setup an ad-hoc wireless access point on your PC if you have a wireless network card and it is not in use for anything else.

I'd recommend splashing some cash on a Router. Could save you fortunes in the long run. I'm using the TP-Link MR3420 as I don't have the benefit of Telkom lines where I stay. Use my 3G USB dongle connected to the router and hook wirelessly with this to my PS3, my phones, My PC and any one else who needs to connect to the internet quick whilst visiting me. This Router here will suit you perfect and it's relatively inexpensive.

... and no... I don't work for them :)

I had to get this right on my notebook WITHOUT 3rd party software. Here is what I did, and it works like a bomb (you need a wifi card of course and Windows 7).
Wifi cards a pretty cheap if you need to get one.

1. Open a command prompt as Administrator.
2. Execute "netsh wlan show settings" and check that hostednetwork is enabled.
3. Execute "netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid="REPLACE WITH YOUR OWN NETWORK NAME" key="REPLACE WITH YOUR PASSWORD" keyUsage=persistent"
4. Execute "netsh wlan start hostednetwork"

You will now see your new network listed in Network and Sharing Center. Myself and a colleague have both connected to my new network and it works 100%. He is a little bit too far from the company wireless access point so he is now a happy camper :)

Sweet. I'll have to pick up either a router or a wifi card either way by the look of it, so will give these suggestions a shot.

PDA: XXKH3
Phone: XXKH3
CSC XAKH3
Lite'ning Rom v 6.1
Ninphetamine Kernal 2.0.5

My Phone is currently Fu**ed... It thinks I keep plugging the charging cable in and taking it out, which has resulted in a beep/Buzzz every 5 seconds and not quite stellar battery life, lol. At least GPS is gets fixed quick.

Why the hell is there nobody on the south coast selling resisters??? SOmebody post me 301K worth of resistors quick quick please ;)

I’ve done hours upon hours of reading and I am so ready to flash a new firmware – especially to get better battery and wifi performance, hopefully. Rooting and flashing a different ROM afterwards is very appealing to me as well.

However, I’ve come across some conflicting messages and I’d just like to clear it out, guidance would be so much appreciated :) (The XDA Galaxy S2 forums have reached 62 000 and 45 000 posts and that would be an impossible read through!)

On the mybroadband GS2 battery usage thread I’ve read that if your phone’s Baseband version / Kernel number says e.g. XWKE7, then you would need a firmware version that also starts with XW. Is this true? I hope this is untrue as the latest up to date version on the XDA thread of ‘Intratech’ seems to be XXKH3 and I’d like to update to that if I can?

By how much can your CSC differ to the rest of your PDA/PHONE versions? Until a South African is released, must it absolutely be a ‘XEU’ version? I’m hoping it’s not true, because I’d prefer to download just one firmware upgrade and update it with Odin from there without using parts from different firmware downloads (due to data constraints (: )...but would do so if necessary. I’d like to update to the aforementioned XXKH3 which has a CSC of OXAKH3. (The latest one with XEU is firmware XXKH1 with a CSC of XEUKD1). ThePhilosopher said he made this update with the OXA CSC and didn’t have any problems…but Mici said if you do update the OXA part you will lose your data…I just want to get more confirmation please :)

If I will lose my data, is it possible to rather keep my current CSC and just upgrade my PDA and PHONE parts? I am looking for a non-wipe solution at my ‘amateur’ stage of development :)

So currently my phone stats are as follows:
PDA: I9100XWKE7
PHONE: I9100JCKE1
CSC: I9100JCKE1

Barring any obstacles, could I update to that XXKH3 (with a CSC of OXAKH3?). If not that CSC, is there a better one you guys know of?

I want to root after firmware update, I’ve backed up to my sd card using MyBackup – do you guys reckon that’s sufficient in unlikely case of something going wrong? This is my baby now and I can’t lose it!!! Freaking awesome phone…

I flashed intratechs non-wipe firmware. i am now on XXKH3 and OXAKH3 for CSC. It did not wipe my data. ALthough I didnt mind if it did because i had nothing on it anyway. But if you want it just make sure it is intratechs non-wipe version.

i havent been in the loop for the last week or so i am not sure if a SA specific csc is around. btw i was also on the exact same firmware as you.

>>Subways81 - Have you tried doing a full-wipe and reflashing. I found this sorted out a few problems a while back after being lazy and flashing a Rom without clearing and wiping. May or may not help.

Thanks ThePhilosopher! In that case I believe I can safely go ahead.

On that XDA thread of Intratech there is no option between a wipe and non-wipe version as far as I can see. But he does warn on the firmware updates that actually do wipe in big bold uppercase senteces, so I'm assuming this won't wipe.

I can't wait!

Nope, when doing a "full wipe" does it erase everything? I really like the way my desktop and App Draw are setup at the mo :( but i guess I could start again...

Use Titanium Backup. Backup all user apps, user data and system data. Flash your new ROM, get Titanium back on your device and restore same. It will be setup just as it was (or damned close) before flashing.

It does erase everything unfortunately. Though if you having problems this may not be a bad thing. I'd say make a backup of settings etc. with Titanium and backup Master but this may result in you having the same problem after reflashing. Best bet is full factory wipe and reflash. Sorry bro

Hm, I hadn't thought of trying it that way personally, but since I don't have an AP at work but I do have wifi in my Thinpad T61...

Except this is what I get after trying to start it.
Code:
The hosted network couldn't be started.
The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested opera
tion.

Can't seem to find out what the issues is, have you had any experience with that ?

Unfortunately not dude. I only discovered this way of doing it yesterday and it worked right off the bat. Came into the office this AM, fired up my notebook and SGS2 connected to the notebook with no problems. I am afraid Google is going to be your friend in this case ):

Ok, I've had this phone for three days now and I'm not exactly overwhelmed. What spoilt it for me was playing with my friend's Sony Ericsson, which runs on the same operating system so by the time I got my phone, I kind of knew what to expect.

What I must compliment it on though, is that it does what it does with minor hiccups - no mess, no fuss. And am I happy with my choice? A resounding yes :)

What is it, that you are not so overwhelmed about? Changing to a new operationg system? Or the features of the phone?
